Students conduct
experimental
weekend at Falls
BY CATH WOODEN
• 1 -...-
If Dawn Bronson and
Fran Morris have their
way, the •Falls Reserve
Conservation Area is
going to be more than just
pretty to look at.
The' two university
students have been hired
under the Federal Youth
Employment program to
conduct a survey among
campers and develop
weekend activities for
campers and day visitors
to the park. Dawn is a
recreation major at the
University of Waterloo's
university and her
assistant, Fran Morris is
a graduate student in
geography at Sir Wilfred
Laurier in Waterloo.
The students have been
analyzing the ,type of
camper that visits the
Falls Reserve through a
demographics survey
and are planning to hold
an expprin•iental weekendggn}e
will . be 'a nature hike,
baseball games, bingo,
and an evening wiener
roast, campfire, and sing-
song. Sunday morning
will feature a craft.
session for youngsters.
.If all goes well, the'
students, plus two more
hiredunder the
Experience '80 program,
will run 'theme
weekends' throughout the
summer; for example., an
arts weekend which will
feature sketching
seminars and. nature
photography, or heritage,
water; or bird weekends.
Visitor services are
common to mast
.provincial parks, such as
Point Farm, but this is
the first year that funds, have 'been available to
study camper •needs at
the Falls Reserve and
attempt to implement
services. Explains Dawn,
"Hbpefullty, by the end of
the: summer, we can

that come here and what
they want.”
of activities. lime 6,7,8.
On the Friday evening,
they plan to show films,
and on Saturday there

How did you like that
front page "Summer
Schedule of Events" in
last week's paper? Ruiners' riners' parade
was just great. I'm sure
everyone enjoyed it.
The Farmers' Market
this Saturday, June 7 is a
first try for the rec.
department but if people
like it, the following
'Markets' will be won-
derful. Fresh fruits and
vegetables may be in
short supply because of
the cold weather - but all
we can do is grumble to
reliev,e the tension.
Tension is BAD for ypu.
It raises your blood
pressure which leads to
all kinds of -surprising
ailments like indigestion,
hives and temper -
temper. So cuss a little bit
- blow your top - then
relax - that's the only way
to beat it and your doctor
.will approve. (I wish I'd
take my own advice) .
To get back to the
Farmers' Market, it is
not only for the farmers.
Folks will have all
KINDS of things to sell
and the groups that are
trying to raise money will
be there with their
goodies. There will be
baked goods, crafts 'and
Martha Rathburn
many art things that
people do so well and the
arty -crafty home crafts
are always interesting.
So this is going to be a
real market, ' selling a
great variety of things.
besides fruit and
vegetables. AND it will
be under the grandstand'
all protected from the
weather - How about
THAT.
Don't forget that
gymnastics for the
youngsters , starts today
Wednesday, June 4, and
they should have
registered upstairs in the
Recreation office. Also
for the June Saturdays -
there will be matinees in
the. Arena, I believe.
Show time is at 1:30 p:m.
The film this week
"Laurel and: Hardy", and
the kids love them. Next
week is a "horror" film
and so on to the end of
June,
'The series of concerts
at the bandshell at
Harbour Park is going to
be good. You can get a
schedule on this.
Also in June there will
be the Optimist Club
Festival - a three day
music and craft festival
with entertainment on
June 26,27,28,
Don't forget to put your
papers and books you
wish to donate, out front
before 10 a,m. for the
Rotarians' paper . drive.
Please notice that the
date has been (.Lunged to
June 14, a Saturday. I
hope you found that the
papers - folded in half - fit
nicely into those big
grocery bags you hate to
throw out. It is a lot
easier than trying to tie
stacks of papers and the
bags are easy to handle
on the pickups. Books go
fine in the cardboard
boxes.
Here is another mark
your calendar item: The
date for Bluewater
Centre Antique Show and
Sale is Fri., August 15 and
Saturday, August 16.
Nile Church supper is
tonight, Wednesday, A
Monster -Garage Sale will
be held at Ashfield
Township Shed on June
14. It will include a bake
sale and auction items.
On' June 11 Goderich
Little Theatre will hold
its annual dinner at
Maitland Golf Club
beginning at 6 p.m. All
members - the whole
thousand of you - are
invited to attend but
please call 524-7226 right
away.
Hope youdidn't forget
the Hospital Auxiliary
Penny Fair today,
'Wednesday, June 4.
On Saturday afternoon,
June 7, an Auction Sale
will be held on the lawn of
St. George's rectory or
indoors if it is raining.
On June 13 at 8 p.m.
there will be a Variety
Concert at North Street
United Church Hall for
the MacKay Centre for
Seniors.
Have you seen the
Leisure Programs for
evAe.ryone - Children,
youth and adult? These
are very well arranged
and are listed in the
booklet "Spring and
Summer Recreation '80
Port of Goderich".
Without' this heok you
might miss the Lions'
beef barbecue on June 28,
29 and 30 and the Air
Show on, June 28. This
weekend is also 'friend-
ship time and our sister_
Bay City will be visiting
here.
From June'22•to August
31 there will be' concerts
in Harbour park.
Keep working at the
things you like to do.
Some people give up too
easily. Remember - the
difficult you can do at
once but the impossible
takes a little longer. And
that is -so true!
One time I asked, "Are
you a turtle?" but I have
never received a sensible
answer. Now, that is just
what I expected - but I
know someone cute and
petite who started the
whole silly thing, who will
someday come up with
the right answer. In the
meantime, just keep
plodding along, enjoying
each day as it comes. To
get the best out of each
day just SMILE.- and
keep on plodding. You'll
find the key -word in there
some place. .
Try looking 'up the
words to the old songs.
You can spend a pleasant
hour just sharpening up
your memory. I just hope
you get a chance to have
some
practice before
Tune '?
Concert Band gets you to
SING ALONG.
Have a good weekend
Love, Martha
The students ofGDCI held a punk day at the school last Wed-
nesday and—part the activnie included a series of record-
breaking events. Here, Dennis Aubin, Bill Shewfelt and Mike
Murphy attempted to break the old record of drinking a bottle of
pop in seven seconds without using their hands. Their efforts fell
short of the old mark. (photo by Dave Sykes)
Hire a student
Debbie Searis has taken many business related'
courses at high school and she has a. very good
typing speed. Her skills would be an asset in a job in
an office or a store. Debbie also enjoys working
with people and she has considerable experience
working with others. This summer she would like to
work In an office or a store - especially a clothing
store. If you have a job for Debbie or any student,
call the Canada Employment Centre for Students at
