Early this year, a
wagon was pushed into
the woodworking shop at
the Bluewater Centre for
the •Developmentally
Handicapped. It con-
sistedof four wheels and
some rusty looking
hardware With a platform
perched on top. The
question was put to
supervisor of the shop,
Fritz Basler: Could he
and the residents make
something of this wagon?
Well, Mr. Basler didn't
have any plans for 'the
reconstruction of such a
wagon and although he
had never worked on
° anything like it before, he
decided to take it onas a
special project for the.
residents he teaches.
Four weeks later, the
platform with four wheels
was transformed into a
beautiful oke show wagon
of simple solid design
complete with chrome
handrails and a padded
seat. The total cost for its
reconstruction was $614
(this included new tires).
The cost was un-
derwritten by the Cen-
tre's volunteer
association •

Mr. Basler . calls the
show wagon "an
original". and estimates
that it could now be
valued at approximately
$2,500.
Although it hasn't
made its debut yet, the
wagon will be drawn by
four white ponies in eight
to ten parades around the
county this year. •It will.
also be on display during
special ,days at. the
Centre.
Entering the wagon in
parades in various
communities is good
public relations for the
Centre, explains Bill
Gregg, facility director.
"It makes people
aware of the Centre. It
tells them we're here and
that we're also interested
in the progress of their
towns," he says.
The wagon also serves
another. •purpose --to ride
in it during parade is
socially stimulating for
the residents.
Everybody loves a
parader,The residents are
Hiway' asking w'hen's the
next .parade? Can we
go?," says Mr. Gregg.
The reconstruction of
the wagon provided many
hours of enjoyment,
enthusiasm and pride on
the part of the six to eight
residents who had a hand
in transforming it. The
'project generated much
interest with everyone at
the Centre and it was a
labor of love right from
the start.
Mr. Basler explains
that the. project also
helped keep the residents

the supervision of Fritz Basler and Lyle Brown, Here,
they take some measurements on lawn furniture.
