Joints cause.problems
During commissioning
of. Bruce Heavy Water
Plant "B" in 1979, there
were a number of
problems with expansion
joints in the large piping
on the suction .of the
blowers.
While some heavy.
water was produced, the
problems with expansion
joints caused temporary
shutdowns for. repair or
replacement. The
decision was made early
in 1980 to shut down the
plant, and :replace • the
joints With expansion
"pipe loops".
The pipe loops are
designed and engineered
to. take up the four inches
of differential expansion,
which' can occur between

of temperature changes
,which occur normally
during plant start-up and
