WEDNESDAY, APRIL 2,11980 resters take honor BY GEORGE SUTTON The Industrial League ended 18 weeks of competition, last Satur- day with their Cham- .:..pionship,.$onspiel, This year's champions are the Foresters and the Champion Sales office. Cana -'- Bogie, Jim Hawkins, Ralph Foster and Jamieson Ribley represented the Foresters with style and talent throughout the year losing only once in the entire. season. They continued their winning ways in the championship though, it wasn't easy. In their first match of the day Jack MacKinnon and the Huron Health Unit gave the eventual champs all they could handle. They had the chance to send the match into extra ends in the last end but came up just short with his draw. This 3 to 2 win was followed, by another close one point victory over the Local 1863 unit. This game • pitted two-time champion Local 1863 against the Forester foursome and the game was what everyone ex- pected. Union skip Jack Kellough played ex- tremely well throughout the day and along with Glen Falkiner, Charlie Crawford and Roger Bois they showed why their name is on the Signal - Star Trophy twice. This year, however, it was the Foresters who made the big `shots with Jim Hawkins providing the pressure shots in this 5 to 4 victory. The two wins moved the first place Foresters into the showdown match with second placed AM,G Hospital No. 1. The Hospital foursome of Peter Bergin, Dennis Miskie, Ron Klages, and Tom Jasper had finished their 15 and 3 -season on a winning streak and it continued into the Bon - spiel. Their first victim of this exciting day was the GDCI Teacher No. 2 team. As was the case so many times in this bonspiel, the match could have went either way but some fine draws by Klages and 'Miskie in the final ends resulted in a 5 to 2 win.. The win moved the Hospital unit into a - confrontation with the Assessment Office who had humiliated the GDCI No. 1 team in their first match of the day. This time it was Bergin and Jasper who sparkled for the Hospital reps as they overpowered Jim Bell's foursedme 6 to 2. The Championship game began with an upset fan the air as the " underdog. _Ho. spital crew took an early 3 to Tlead. The Foresters were well aware of the talent of their opponents since• their only loss of the season was at the hands of the Hospital foursome. Behind the strong leadership of skip Cam Bogie however, the Foresters were able to overcome very slow ice and the early deficit to post an impressive 12 to 3 final score. They left no doubt that they deserve to be called the champions of the "A" Division of the Industrial League. The loss' left 'AM & G Hospital No. 1: with second place honours. Third prize, which was donated by Champion Roads Ltd., went to the GDCI Teacher No. 1 team • who rebounded from a crushing defeat to the Assessment Office to win their next two matches over the GDCI No. 2 team and the Huron Health Unit. The fivesome of Barb Otte well, Del Almeide, Bill Worsell, Doug Bundy and George. Sutton had little trouble with a luckless GDCI No. 2 unit but needed a perfect last shot to defect cowboy Jack MacKinnon in their final contest. Local 1863 bounced back from the disap- pointment of losing to the Foresters to win fourth prize as they defeated the GDCI Teacher No. 2 team intheir final match. Teacher skip Chris Connor "showed future potential but the old veteran Kellough was too sharp for the union reps - as they claimed an 8 to 5 victory and edged the Maitland Golfers by one point. The Golfers defeated the Assessment Office in their final match of the day 4 to 3. Sue White and KayDuncan led the last game' surge but it was just short of effort putout by Local1863. The Champion Sales Office foursome of Paul Bolan, Don Kent, Bill Hayward and Pete Wanner won the Trans Canada Credit Trophy for the second year in a row as they won three im- pressive games. When the day began it certainly did not look like this foursome would be eventual "B" champs as they went behind 6 to 0 after just two ends to the Champion Girls. 0 With a few breaks and superb draw weight the sales reps bounced -back to a 10 to 7 victory, that left Sylvia Bolan and teammates shaking their heads in amazement. This inspiring comeback win was followed with an exciting victory oyer Victoria and Grey 5 to 2 and then an even more exciting triumph over the Oom Club. In any run for the championship a team needs a few breaks and the Sales Office got a big break when the winning rock was tapped into the house for them in the final end. It was a rare mistake by the Oom Club who played very well to earn their berth in the championship game. The Oomers knockedoff the Victoria Sweepers 5 to 2 and the Champion Office 7 to 3 to get to the final contest. The Oom four- some of Jim Mulhern, Cliff Macdonald, Angus MacLennan and skip Jim Collins earned the second place prize money through their efforts while the Champion Sales Office can once again call themselves "cham- pions". Third prize in the "B" Division went to AM & G Hospital No. 2 who ex- perienced a first round upset by Champion Office then rebounded to win their next two over the Victoria Sweepers and then` the' Victoria Har- drocks. In the final game for third prize, skip Jim Rourke was forced to make a double take-out to clinch the victory. The hardluck Har- drocks did end the day on a happy note as they were selected the most im- proved team inthe league and were awarded the Charlie Crawford Trophy. Fourth - place was claimed In a very con- vincing fashion by Vic- toria and Grey as they shut out the Victoria Sweepers in their final contest. The V, G four- some of Pete Crew, John Wink, Eleanor Erskine and Bruce Erskine lost only one game during the day and that was•to the eventual champions. Each and every teats that competed in The Industrial League this season had its moments of satisfaction and its hours of remorse but not once was there a second of unfriendliness and that perhaps is the secret of our League's success. Or maybe it's the booze. See you next year. NOW UNTIL SAT. In Level ' 1 play-offs, Louis Stadelmann will meet Brian Miller in semi-final play.
