Whipper thanks everyone for support
Dear Editor,
For many years, I have
approached my good
friends and associates to
request help in sup-
porting the work of the
Ontario Society for
Crippled Children on •
-behalf of children with
physical handicaps. I
have never been let down.
I want you to know how
much I have always
appreciated your con-
tinued interest and un-
derstanding of the 'ac-
complis1hments that must
be made in the field of
children's rehabilitation.
For the most part, it has
been a long and uphill
battle, but progress is
now being'achleved, at a
more rapid pace than
ever before, and the
future looks bright.
You have helped to
make wonderful things
happen., The •annual
Sriowarama has
developed - into a
tremendous fundraising
event that this year
raised $800,000 in Ontario.
The largest proceeds
ever raised this way, to
my knowledge, in the
world Tfiis amount will
undoubtedly help to
augment the Society's
target for 1980, to. raise
$6,000,000 to help
physically handicapped
children in this province.
By your . excellent
media coverage,
demonstrating faith in
our efforts, the goals will
be reached. That is, to
provide„disabled children
with the opportunity to
reach their fullest
potential and take their
rightful place in the
community.
I wish to thank at this
time, not only you, in the
media" _ but all

Dear Editor,
I have recently been
reading where millions of
Canadians have been
signing a well -organized
petition urging Quebec to
remain within Canada.
The intent of most
Canadains 4n this matter
is an honourable one, for
we have been taught from
birth to look upon Canada
as one country; However,
perhaps we owe it to
ourselves and to our
children to try a little
harder- to see what is
going on.
In the past 12 -years we
have seen Canada
What is a billion?
• Dear Editor:
In these days of soaring
inflation and reckless
government spending,
here are a few figures
that bring, home the
immensity of a billion.
Even my electronic
calculator could notgive.
me all the totals and I had
to rely on my buijt-in
model to help compile the
following facts:
A billion dollar bills
laid end to end'" would
encircle the 'earth nearly
four times.
If you made five trips
between St. John's,
Newfoundland and
Vancouver, youwould
cover a distance of a
billion inches.
The propeller • of an
airplane travelling 300
miles per hour would turn
a billion times if the plane
cruised continuously -- 24
hours a. day -- for nearly
two years.
Scarcely one ,;billion
minutes have -passed
since the year 1 A.D..
When we contemplate
our national debt of $98
billion ($4,250 per person)
and take the foregoing
figure of one billion
minutes and multiply it
by 60, We- .find that
Canada's debt has ex-
' ceeded`$1.50 each second
since the birth of Christ.
If you have read this
far and want to know
what the interest is on
this enormous debt, it is
$10,200,000,000 per an-
• num•.
This amount, of course,
will not• and cannot ever
be paid.

1981 is the International
Year of Disabled Per-
sons. The focus will be on
integration - we want all
of our youngsters to share
an equal opportunity,
regardle$s of handicap,
to contribute to society in
their own way within our
communities. When these
children become adults,
there must be a better
-world for totem. It was a
great honor for Miss
Snowarama, Nadia de
Franco and me to par-
ticipate in Snowarama. I
will be riding again in
1981.
Thank you again for
your support that con-
tributed to the success of
this year's Million Dollar
Ride.
Sincerely,
Whipper Watson.

Who are the Greek scholars?
transformed from an
English-speaking country
with' one bilingual
province, to a country
which, because of the
astute rpresentation of
Expo `67., the '76 Olym-
pics, and through direct
action by the Trudeau
Gdvernment, is now
recognized officially in
the eyes of the world as a
primarily French-
speaking country.
Despite a . still -large
English-speaking
minority in Quebec, the
English. language is no
longer tolerated :there.
But both New. Brunswick
and Ontario are now
bilingual, with their civil
services being changed
over. to French-Canadian
control faster than the
eye can follow. The
remaining provinces•will
be similarly converted
within the next few years.
Billions of dollars of our
taxes have been poured
into our provinces and
into , Francophone.
Associations across
Canada to achieve that
goal, both by our Federal
Government and by
Quebec itself. Our

forces, the RCMP, and

Dear Editor:
Concerning Jehovah's

some of his words...•

meant to imply that a god

are the only advocates of
such a translation.

request you not to quote

Dr. Mantey later stated
concerning the Jehovah's
Witness translation "The
Word was a god" that this
translation was
diabolical, deceptive and
inexcusable.
Dr. Mantey is con-

the only one whom the
Watchtower Society has
quoted, who is still able to
