1006 gRICH SMNAi*-STAR, THURSDAY, MARCH 20, 1980 lfe om the. farm can , hecafine a grind, especially if you can't get away for a change of pace. One way farmers can break the routine is to offer farm vacat bns. Twenty-one Ontario farmers and _,i.. their families • are inviting vacationers to their farms for an alternative holiday this year. These farms 'offer a wide range of activities and vacation packages ranging from two to three days to all summer long. "Although vacation farms wereset un.to give urban people an op- portunity to experience life on the farm, there are side benefits for the farm family," says Sharon van Son, of the agricul-tura1 manpower services branch, Ontario -Ministry of Agriculture and Food. "Some farmers enjoy offering farm vacations because the demands of the farm make it difficult. to travel, especially during the busy growing season," she says. "By opening their doors to vacationers, they meet people from across Ontario, Canada and other countries. Many farmers also enjoy teaching urban people about the realities of farm life." Vacation farmers are tnembers of the Ontario Vacation Farm Association. This non- profit, organization co- ordinates • farm vacations, and with the assistance of the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food, publishes a list. of vacation farms each year. Most member farms are working far- ms, ranging from beef and dairy operations, to cash crop and mixed farming enterprises. Many vacation farms provide accommodation in -the farm. home, but some have separate guest houses for visitors. Some farms feature three home -cooked meals :Hamburger used for rabies test Twenty -thousand hambruger baits will be distributed by aircraft into rem.ote bush areas of Huron County this winter to test bait'acceptance by ' foxes 'for future rabies control, - Natural Resources Minister James Auld announced recently. The Minister explained that each bait will •contain a strati amount of the common antibiotic tetracycline -- a • biological marking agent. "The teeth of a fox that has eaten a bait show 'fluorescent yellow lines under ultra -violet microscope examination," he said.. Wild foxes and skunks are the main carriers 'of rabies in Ontario. Mr. Auld said that by examining a number of foxes fr.ara the_ baited areas it will be possible to determine • the ac- ceptance of,the bait. In future the baits, if found acceptable to the animals, will he used to administer a new oral rabies vaccine which is still in the development stage. 4-H clubs. '• from page ,y .
