PUC lit up the Square in late '70s
A major project for the
Goderich Public Utilities
Commission during the
past decade has been
their involvement with
the •. Business
Improvement
Association on the
redevelopment of The
Square. •
The efficient use of
energy not only played a
part in the' project but
proved to be a bcncfit-in—
the redevelopmentand
its a project that PUC
manager Al, Lawson
reviews with pride.
Tn changing the
traditional street pole
lighting system to •one
utilizing a fashionable old
style lamp standard,
energy management
became a prime con•
-
sideration.
• Putting in the n-ew
Standards meant takini,
down the existing street
lighting which was later
used on the widening of
highway '21 south of the
town.
The old system used 24
sodium lamps all located
on the inside perimeter of
the roadway around the
Square. Ten in-
candescent floodlights
were mounted on the
inside. of the streetlight
;pales to illuminate the
centre of the park and
courthouse. Annual
energycosts wen. $1,800.
The original rer• •vation
dans called for a new
lighting system con-
sisting of mercury
vapour lamps While this
system • would have
contributed tu the sought
after "look" for The
Square, its total elec-
trical". load was almost
doisble the old load.
Annual energy costs
would have been $3;300.
and material costs for
this system would have
amounted to $90,000.
In reviewing these
plans with- the local
council, Lawson
suggested 'a more ef-
ficient use of energy
woiird save money and
still be in keeping with
the contemporary
thinking behind The
Square's redevelopment.
Lawson also obtained
the advice of police chief
Pat King on the lighting'
necessary for optimum
safety and security in The
Square. In addition, he
'suggested that a variety
of lighting manufacturers
should tender for the job
and stressed that they
take efficient energy use
into account in their
proposals.

Eventually, Lawson,

proposals fitting the
intent of The Square's
renovation objective. It
