(photos by Todd Mowatt ) Sailors defeat Wingham 5-3 BY TD The Goderich Sailors went into their Christmas break with an impressive record of four wins in their last five games, follow- ing a split of two games last weekend in OHA Junior 'C' hockey action. Friday, in Walkerton, the Sailors saw their three -game winning streak come to an end in an unbelievable 17 - 8 loss to the Walkerton Blackhawks. It was not just the total of 25 goals scored that made the game unusual. What was more frustrating for the Sailors was that they held leads of 5 -1 in the first period and 7 - 5 in the second period and still lost by nine goals. The Sailors bounced back Sunday, playing much more disciplined hockey, to defeat the Wingham Jokers 5 - 3. • The score was tied 1 - 1 after one period. Grant Garrow scored the Goderich goal on a play with Todd Graham and Shawn Larder, but Tracy Kennedy's goal tied it. The Sailors got two second period goals to gain the lead. Daryl Madge scored from the slot after taking a pass from Todd Graham. Grant Garrow also assisted on the play. Chris Sideris then scored an unassisted goal just 28 seconds later to put the Sailors in command. The Jokers took advantage of power play situations to tie the score early in the third period. Blake Flett drifted a long shot past Randy Gaynor who had replaced Doug Dickson in the Sailors' net. Dickson had been playing well, but was taken ill and had to leave the game. The Jokers' Jamie McPherson got the equalizer four minutes into the period. From that point on, the Sailors controlled the play. John Thompson had defenceman Kevin Telford's shot from the point deflect off him for the go-ahead goal after Grant Garrow won the face-off and then Daryl Madge scored the insurance marker, coming in from the point to put his own rebound past Mitch Braun in the Wingham goal. Gamow and Lavin ualiow assisleu. In the 17 - 8 shootaut in Walkerton, Shawn Larder scored the hat -trick for the Sailors. Dave Gallow and Brad Annstrong had two goals apiece and John Thompson scored the other Goderich goal. Defenceman Daryl Madge had a big night in the assist department, with five. John Graham was credited with three assists, John Thompson had two and Mark Crawford, Kevin Lee, Mark Burbine and Pete Willems had one apiece. For Walkerton, Joe Zetler and Jamie Bradstock had four goals each and Bill Knox had three. The Sailors are playing in a tournament in Leamington over the holidays. Their first three games see them go up against Leam- ington, Simcoe and and Woodhaven, Michigan. The Sailors return to league ac- tion Friday, January 3 with a game in Kin- cardine. Their next home game is Friday, January 10, against the Wingham Jokers. Legion midgets end losing streak defence held to preserve the win.
