Wednesday night the Sailors travel to Kin - Sailor comeback falis one goal short in 7-6 loss to Port Elgin Bears The Goderich Sailors began the long road back to respectability with a strong effort against the Port Elgin Bears here Sunday in OHA Junior C hockey. It still was not good enough to win, but compared to most of their games lately, the 7-6 loss to the second place Port Elgin Bears was almost as good as a win. The Sailors' losing streak stands at eight games now but if they can continue to play as they did in the second and third periods Sunday night, they should be able to win soon. Tonight the Sailors play in Kincar- dine against the Kinucks and Friday they travel to Wingham to play the Jokers, formerly the Ironmen, who now have a new sponsor, Joe Kerr Construction, hence the new team name. Sunday at 7 p.m. the Kinucks will be here for a return match with the Sailors. For the first period here last Sunday the Sailors Looked like they were headed for another blowout. They were down 4-1 at the end of the period and many of the Sailors showed little willingness to pay the price against the Bears, a team known for finishing their checks. Abone-crushing check handed out by the Sailors Ray Vanstone seemed to turn things around. The check, a legal one, with no penalty assessed, put the Bears' tough guy, captain Ken Pederson, out of the game. From that point on the Sailors began to play together as a team and gave some indication that theX might regain some of the intensity with which they played earlier in the season. Each team scored twice in the second period and the Sailors outscored the Bears 3-1 in the third period but could not get the equalizer. Mike Chennette and Mike Duncan had two goals each for the Bears. Jamie Pegg, Jim Craddock and Bill Krueger scored singles. Brad Armstrong, Dave Gallow, John Thompson, Mark Burbine, Pete Willems and Rick Shakes all scored one goal apiece for the Sailors. The game marked a vast improvement over the Sailors 10-2 loss Friday night in Hanover. The undefeated Barons, who top the league with 16 wins and two ties in 18 games, scored five unanswered goals in the third period to turn the game into a rout. Dave Hopkins and Rob Beitz had three goals apiece for the Barons, Rob Wallace scored twice and Dan Neil and Chris Ahrens had one goal each. Todd Jeffrey and Chris Sideris scored the Sailors goals.
