Local bowler places second in Ontariocompetition
• A Goderich bowler just about made it to
the big time in a recent five -pin bowling
tournament played in Toronto.
Art Burt of Vanastra competed against
the top bowlers in Ontario and placed se-
cond, averaging 272 over 15 games. The
winner of the tournament advanced to
represent Ontario in the Southern Ontario
CBC finals. The program will be aired for
five weeks, starting January 8.
Burt was not content with his second
place finish and he vows to make it to the
top next year. He has been bowling for 23
years and he feels that concentration is the
key to the sport.
"When I go up to the line, I think about
getting a strike - it's the name of the
game. Then I look for my spot on the floor.
I may look at the pins for a second before I
begin my wind up. But when I get my spot,
I keep my eye on it until the ball crosses
it," he says.
"Nine times out of 10 I know when I let
the ball go if it is going to be a strike or
not," he states.
Burt has never bowled a perfect game in
his lite and he never wants to.
"I think bowling a perfect game would
spoil future games because every time you
throw the ball, you would think it was .go-
ing to be a strike and then it would be
frustrating when it wasnt't," he explains.
Burt is a very energetic bowler. He
bowls in Goderich one night a week, is a
spare on a travelling bowling team in Clin-
ton and teaches children how to bowl on
the weekends.
After 23 years, Burt has developed a few
bowling hints that may. help the novice
bowler.
"People feel that the harder they throw
the ball, the more pins they'll knock down.
I know from experience that this isn't the
case. Guys who throw the ball hard have
decent averages, but if they slowed the
ball down, they would find their scores
would improve," Burt says.
Burt feels that there are a number of
variables in bowling - including the
weather.
"In the winter when it is cold outside, in
some alleys the pins are cold and the pin
fall is terrible. When it is humid, the pins

Midget girls reach
consolation final in
Huron -Perth tournament
it has been a long and frustrating season
for the Midget Girls basketball team.
Building a team from scratch is tough but
when you have 15 girls who are willing and
able to lear, it makes the building process
easter.
After a successful start, winning the first
three games, the Vikes ran into stiff com-
petition and lost six in a row.
However, one bright spot during that los-
ing streak was the team's first tournament
in Stratford. The girls played well in both
games, losing the first to a strong Catholic
Central team 50-25 and the second, 54-41 in
a hard-fought battle against Stratford Nor-
thwestern.
Top scorers in the tournament were Juli
Melick with 26 points while Teresa Brindly
with nine, Teresa Meriam, eight, Shelley
Adams, six, Beth MacDonald and Kara
Gower , four each and Kim Edward with
two points rounded out the soring.
Each team shoots f ,r one ultimate goal -
the Huron -Perth charnpionship-and
Goderich's chance carne on Wednesday,
Nov. 13 at Stratford Northwestern.
The Vikings lost the first game 40-18 to
the Mitchell Blue Devils. Melick and
Meriatn had four points each while Ed-
ward. Brindley. Adams and Kathy Lomas
4
all chipped in with two points.
The Vikings next game was a c•rc,wd-
pleaser as Goderich and i.tstowell were
tied at 55 after regulation time but the Vik-
ings pulled out a 61-60 victory after the
three-minute overtime. Meriam led the
team with a career high 27 points while
Adams added 12 points.
The win boosted Goderich into the con-
solation final against the Madill Mustangs
from Wingham. The game was again
decided in the final minutes.
Defense was the key in the game as the
Vikings displayed their ability to shut
down many of Wingham's best shooters. A
total team effort resulted in the consola-
tion charnpionshion for the Vikings.
Melick again led the offense with 23
points while Adams chipped in with 12.
Meriam had seven points for the winners
and Brindley with four points, MacDonald
with three and Angie Larder and Edward
with two apiece rounded out the scoring.
The members of the Goderich Viking
midget girls basketball team include;
Julie Melick, Angie Larder, Kim Edward,
Teresa Brindley, Teresa Meriam, Beth
MacDonald, Tina Hamilton, Kara Gower,
Shelley Adams. Kathy Lomas, Heather
Bogie and Tracey Cotter. The team was
coached by i.ynn Meyers.
don't have as much action," he explains.
Even the type of pin affects a player's
average according to Burt. Personally, he
prefers the free standing wooden pins to
the string held plastic pins.
Burt is now preparing for the Colt 45
tournament in Clinton next week. He hopes
to do well as there is a chance he could win
up to $10,000.
