I Pilot ti be Sharon Dietz) Danger - Girls Working fails to provide suitable vehicle for acting talent BY SUSAN HUNDERTMARK .Just the title, Danger -Girls Working! ", should have been warning enough. But, the play by James Reach performed by Goderich Little Theatre from Oct. 30 to Nov. 2 failed to provide a suitable vehicle to display the promising talents of local ac- tors. Billed as a mystery comedy for women, the play tries to combine the intrigue of a diamond heist with the goings-on at a boar- ding house for girls. And, while the actors manage to pique the audience's interest in each character, the plot was too predic- table to hold that interest. Arlene ( Diane Siemon) and Selena (Sheila Berlet) provide some of the comic element with their desperation to date any man, preferably one with a car. Though Arlene's constant use of the endearment ' `Hun"' serves to display her irreverent at- titude, it begins to grate on the nerves by the second act. Grayce, the music student ( Roberta Machan), Hannah, the romantic (Nisa Howe), Claudia, a home girl (Samantha McDonagh), Miss Verne, a woman of mystery (Barbara Ellen MacLeod) and Lulu Ann (Shelli Berlet -Barlow) are the suspects when Mrs. McCarthy's diamonds go missing. Kathy Jenkins is wonderful as the nosey landlady Mrs. McCarthy, especially when she sobs and wails when she discovers her diamonds are missing. Another highlight of the play is Rosie, the maid, played by Maureen Penn. Dress- ed in a housedress, slippers and incredibly tight knee-high stockings, she elicits a ARTS laugh from the audience every time she appears on stage. Phyllis, the newspaper woman who wants to write mystery novels, is the self- appointed sleuth in the play. Ann Coulter who plays Phyllis appears somewhat un- comfortable or stifled in her role but makes a good attempt. The subplot involving Ray Cartwright (Eveleen McDonagh), the brooding ac- tress and Lulu Ann, the girl from the South is particularly predictable. From the first time they met, it was obvious they were mother and long lost daughter but the play never explained why the two were separated in the first place. How the subplot even fit in the main action of the play was questionable. When Miss Verne comes to the rescue as the insurance agent and discovers the diamonds in the heel of the shoe of Ciaudia, alias "Diamond Lil", all the audience can do is groan. The whole setting of the play is out -dated and therefore hard to relate to. Young women no longer live in boarding houses or wait breathlessly for the phone to ring in hopes of hearing from their "dream man." Goderich Little Theatre attracts con- siderable local talent. It needs a better play than "Danger -Girls Working" to display that talent.
