The Goderich Signal-Star, 1985-11-06, Page 23sp v4; 'Xvu,Y91 yt 431, "'`at wrly 173 mJi 7. Jt ia; yr aa1., ('1iiWit tTGER Two years after retiring from his 18 year career at Goderich District Collegiate In- stitute as teacher and. principal, John Str- inger wants to continue his activity in the vommunity as a councillor. "I've always seemed to have a need to be involved and have a say in things," he says. An active member of the Lions Club and the Navy veterans, Stringer is running for council for the first time since he moved to Goderich in 1952. "Goderich has been good to me; it's a way of giving something back," he says. Part of what he wants to give back to Goderich is his experience in administra- tion,,education and decision-making. "I am for progressive growth and change but I'm also aware that a very rapid growth could be detrimental. We need a balance of meeting the needs of the public with fiscal responsibility," he says. tomes .4t> g and we. Though he has not attended any council meetings as an observer, hehas attended council as a presenter for the Lions Club. "I see an effective councillor as a leader with experience in decision-making and a good team player," he says. The former principal of GDCI says he's used to being a public figure and does not anticipate any trouble with handling public scrutiny. Though there is no particular issue Str- inger sees as important for this election, he says the main issue is which six of the 12 candidates running for Goderich council would make the best councillors. "I don't represent any special group and I have no axe to grind. I just want to be in- volved in community affairs," he says. Controlled growth must be our aim STAN PROFIT After his defeat in 1982 for the mayoralty seat on Goderich council, Stan Profit would like to return to council and put his previous 12 years' experience to work towards controlled growth for the town. "I think what has happened during the past three years has been the most comfor- table for the councillors. I believe being on council for the 12 years before contributed to these three comfortable years. With the experience of having come through the tough times, I can help V.ith controlled growth," he says. Profit says he can see the town growing to a population of 10.000 but h, gr•nu suc- cessfully and in an nrderl> fashion, it would have to be monitored To help the town do so, Profit sats his strengths include common `t Ilse. com- munication, exiterir•ncr' and understanding. Ile says he can also offer the business skills he's gained as owner of Sandy's Barber Shop for 22 cars "A great crass section of people entre through the barber shop I I:cl a rood feel- ing of what'the town thnik- More And. there's an 'optimism In hitt n ' hat hasn't been there for awhile. he .:1 Dealing with t he hunch clement ,,f1 issues is what Profit tis t he r loci to -at "I thing Goderich and It- rt'pt•esen- tatives treated Laird 1•:rslt•t ul .1 •:hodcl manner.
