Culture seeking legislation to h ge.the library board to; thatof a closed ommittee. ...Your readerswill be interested, that this request flies. in the face. of 'a historical background of open, public boards accoun- table to the citizens of Ontario and the pro- posed changes will also go against the new Ontario Public Library Act of 1984. Some reeves who sit on County Council have been acclaimed to office and without , the input of the taxpayers these people may ,' feel their own personal opinions reflect those of their community. I am hoping many library users will phone their reeves and ask A we neede them their stand on closed committees ver- sus open boards and in turn give them our opinions to these, our political represen- tatives. We should really communicate to all con- cerned, our MPP Jack Riddell, the Minister of Citizenship and Culture Lily Monroe, the warden and the library board that we do not want to risk losing a centuries old freedom of access to a public library board and, in its place, be given a closed committee whose decision will only be known to the select few. Also, your readers may not realize that this issue has not been brought before the board. We have not, discussed the true or voted On ourdissolution,,. fact, our board chairman, Mr. Grant Stirling, was never 111 authorized by the board; to speak on Qnr behalf on this subject. I am assuming that he was offering his own opinion, something he did not make very clear. Ell Please, before election day, call your 111 reeve and send a letter to the library board (66 Waterloo St., Goderich) giving us your • views on this most important change in ■ library policy. Better yet, if you are able, come to our next board meeting on Tuesday, November 12 at 1:30 p.rp. in the council IN chambers, second floor, Court House, II Goderich. Your presence and your letters 1111 will tell so much. 11 -developed facility is din this community Dear editor, An upcoming municipal election and the expression of teenage views such as those of Denise Welsh (Letter to Editor, October 30, 1985) prompt me to reopen the question of developing a comprehensive recreational facility for Goderich and district. As a newer physician in town, I have been privileged to welcome many new arrivals to Goderich and thus my awareness of the views of newer residents to the area may be more comprehensive than most. In the course of dialogue relating to healthful lifestyles and preventative health care, discussion commonly focuses on forms of physical recreation available locally. Fre- quently my patients express their sincere disappointment at the absence of well- developed facilities in this community in- cluding such amenities as an indoor pool, courts for racquet sports and workout equip- ment.. This is particularly so among my retired patients who were already establish - Ban on overn Dear editor, It is that time of year when I remind citizens of Goderich that the ban on over- night parking comes into effect again on Nov. 15. From Nov. 15 until Mar. 15 overnight parking on any street in town is prohibited between the hours of 2 a.m. and 7 a.m. The ed in fitness programs before coming here.' Scattered fragments of the whole exist already, but there hasn't been the civic co- ordination to bring these resources under one roof in a comprehensive complex to serve the needs of all ages in our communi- ty. This is not a project to await the ex- clusive impetus of private investment as fitness is too important to be available only to those who can afford the fees that such an enterprise would require to be profitable. We depend upon civic government to pro- vide such co-ordination, and it is time that those who value fitness as an integral part of healthy living express this need to our municipal candidates. I wonder if your and my personal priorities are best served by a 30 million dollar provincial expenditure towards a domed stadium to provide a venue for pro- fessional athletes to exercise when such funds could provide 30 towns with needed facilities. Perhaps with our present strong representation at the provincial level, the Thank you is Janis Bisback. time is ripe to request similar support for atheletes of all ages who want to run, swim and play to keep fit. In Goderich, the best training track in town exists to exercise the horses; we need as good a facility for the humans! I think this may be what the teenage population of town is craving. I wouldn't suggest that it will eliminate the madness of "gravel running". Only a comprehensive program of education and awareness in the schools and in the community backed by ag- gressive enforcement will appraise the public in all age groups of the danger and horror of drunk driving. But something else to do on a Friday night would help to provide some healthy alternatives. I would wish to encourage citizens who share my view to poll council candidates this week to establish where they stand on this matter before we cast our votes. ight parking Nov. 15 olice department will commence enforcing the by-law on Nov. 15.
