The Catholic Women's League (CWE) of St. Peter's Roman
Catholic Church held a successful Christmas Bazaar in the parish
hall Saturday. As evidenced by the above photo, many patrons took
advantage of the lunch special after browsing through tables of
home baked goods, crafts, sewing and other attractions. One of the
more novel features was the guess -the -weight of the pumpkin
display. Chris Wise, 5, and his three-year old sister, Jennifer got a
helping hand from friend, Melissa Lassaline, 6, in trying to deter-
mine the weight of the orange monster. (photos by Dave Sykes)

Students learn
about trees
On Monday, Oct. 21 the Grades 3 and 7
classes from Colborne Central School went
to the Wawanosh Conservation Authority on
• an I -D a tree program to learn how to iden-
tify trees such as yellow birch, red oak and
many others.
They also played games to see which team
could identify trees fastest and had lots of
fun.
One game the Grade 3's played was to
blindfold a partner. The other partner then
led you to a tree to feel it. Your partner then
brought you back. After you took off your
blindfold you had to find the tree.
Some ways we learned to tell the name of
a tree was by its bark. If it had diamond pat-
tern it was white ash, if the bark looked like
burnt corn flakes (or scales) it was black
cherry, if it looked like elephant skin it was
a beech tree and if it looked like muscles (or
waves) it was a blue beech.
4-H team
reaches final in
Reach for Top
An enthusiastic Hurop County 4-H Reach
for the Top team placed second in the On-
tario Championship.
The fourth annual provincial competition
was held on October 18 in Baden, Ontario.
Teams representing twenty-six counties
were involved. The Competition tests the
agricultural, homemaking and general
knowledge of the 4-H members and is
similar to the TV program.
The Huron County team consisted of Paul
Hoggarth, Heather Love, Murray Rundle,
and Liz Stewart. The team was unbeaten
through the semi-finals and held the lead for
most of the final game, but lost to Victoria
County 'by only two correct answers in an
exciting finish.
A $100.00 donation to the Huron County 4-H
Clubs was presented to the team from the
Ontario Public Stockyards.
