few years ago, a man from Kingsbridge
bought mypainting of the old barn at the top
of the hill in,Benmiller. A few days ago I
happened to meet him - even remembered
his name; and that was a surprise - to me!
He lives in London and said he still enjoys
my painting and would likeone of the old
home in Kingsbridge. So, Sunday I drove
down there - after all his instructions
nothing seexned to fit and I stopped in Kin -
tail for directions.
The store was closed, but next door was
the family of Daltons so two nice youngsters
set me straight and I turned back and found
the real big old, old stonehouse - over 100
years old. It was built when the area was
settled by a group of Irish people just out
from the old country - and they really settled
down in that area.
So, now I have another challenge since the
barn and other buildings are no longer
there. But there are some real old birches
beside it and they are showing - showing
their age!
After all the years we had driven through
Kingsbridge with its lovely old church, this
was the first time I had ever gone down their
sideroads to Lake Huron.
At the 'end of one road were a group of
homes with a high wall and gates - very
dice, reminded me of Portugal. Another,
one would not dare go down the winding
road - unless you knew what was ahead of
you. There were several cottages hidden
below the trees but I had no desire to in-
vestigate - or encroach upon their privacy.
It was all interesting but on going down to
Sunset Beach - hadn't been down in many
many years - I had been chewing on some
dates - and suddenly found I was choking on
a piece of the dry husk or whatever those
dates have - so had to ask a nice young lady
who was outdoors, for some water.
I've not been in trouble; like that before,
but on my ramblings usually something
happens to make me remember them. Like
the time the geese scared me to pieces - that
brought a nice letter from Windsor saying in
part - "Martha, geese don't have teeth!"
and it created many laughs., Later that
gentleman sent me a blow-up of the geese
that guard the Walker Brewery building
between Windsor and Tecumseh - (perhaps
IN Tecumseh) I counted over 80 and there
were still many more in that photo. So they
were really "guard geese".
Friday night was fun night at Saltford
Valley Hall set up by the girls of Beta Sigma
Phi - all three groups. Great food, real
hilarious `Fashion Show' then the terrific
hypnotist who had everyone in stitches -
more or less - then the trip to Reno - it too
was great.
Radar had the music under control and
the girls all had a great time - both young
and older - a real break in the season - sort of
made you make up your mind that the sum-
mer was over and the winter fun time was
really here.
So folks, don't let this beautiful weather
fool you. Just hurry up and do all the fall
things you have to do and then you can rest
awhile during whatever winter has to bring.
Will Rogers - you've at least heard of him -
said "Scientists can tell you just the minute
something is going to happen ten miles
away - but none of them have been smart
enough to tell you what day to put on your
winter underwear." So don't go out in the
cold without them. I doubt that I can find
mine!
Take care of each other hope the
youngsters will do the same. We do need
each other most of the time.
