s; to have a good time
Dear Ei411tor,
lith r dj the letters in the Goderich
Signal.Stalr ot*; the past few weeks, I've
noticed thatr;tbe subject of teenage alcohol
use istatattiifgtogain attention.
Halve the°people of Goderich even taken
time out to view exactly what goes on
around them or are people just assuming
things? When Z say this, I mead do people
take into consideration what goes on around
this town on a weekend?
People go out on a weekend to have a good
time, maybe have a few drinks and enjoy
themselves. This means adults as well. As
long as one is of legal age to drink and acts
in a mature manner, then he doesn't usually
get a hassle.
When I read the alcohol-related articles in
the .ppper, I get the impression that the
a tultts think teenagers go out on a weekend
and drink just to become intoxicated. Sure,
there are some people, both adults and
teenagers, who are like that, but not all.
On occasion, you will see teenagers going
to receptions and stag and does just to have
a good time, not necessarily to drink but to
LETTERS
do something different. Goderich isa small
town and there is not much for teenagers to
do besides sit on the Square, or hang out and
get into trouble; h Wever, not everyone does
these things, maybe only a small percen-
tage.
If the adults and students got together
with town council and tried to get some
place for teenagaers to go on weekends then
maybe this town wouldn't be so boring.
Drinking, to teenagers, is not just a matter
of getting intoxicated, it is just a part of hav-
ing a good time. You have to admit, some of
us can handle our alcohol consumption
much better than some of adults around
town. If it is going to be difficult for
teenagers to go out and have maybe one or
two drinks at parties or receptions, then you
can pretty well guarantee that there will be
a great deal more "gravel running" going
on and someone is going to get hurt.
04'
Alli, we want is to be able to go out and have
a good time and not get any hassles. Who
needs them? Teenagers don,'t dlrirak to act
hig or look good towards their peers, they
drink for the same reasons adults do; to
have a good time. We don't have to drink to
have a good time but a drink occasionally
won't hurt.
If you are saying to yourself right now
that there are plenty of things to do in
Goderich, then think again. Consider, for ex-
ample, that teenagers under 1$ can't go to
restricted movies anywhere when they have
probably seen worse on television anyways.
The thing that bothers me, though, about
this province is that you can be married and
have children before you reach the legal
drinking age and then what do you do? It's a
little ridiculous, don't you think?
Don't take me wrong about Goderich. It
isn't a bad place to live but we need more
community co-operation in setting
something up for the teenagers of Goderich.
Thank you,
Deninne Walsh,
Student of G.D.C.I.
Volunteers are needed for
Meals on Wheels in Goderich
Dear Editor,
May I explain a few details about the
`Meals on Wheels' program in Goderich?
Each week I receive calls from persons
Wishing to receive the meals. I try to explain
that we have a waiting list, and that it may
tie sometime before their name heads the
list. Not all the callers understand.
Fifteen meals a day are prepared at our
local hospital, and are delivered five nights
a week, by volunteer drivers. These meals
Ore kept warm in insulated sectional trays.
Two sets of trays are provided, one set being
returned each night.
At present, we have 30 volunteer drivers,
two of whom deliver meals each night. This
program repeats every three weeks. These
Meals are not convenience meals, delivered
to any or every one who asks - but are for
those who have been recommended by their
doctor or health nurse.
: Meal tickets are sold once a month by
Claude Kalfbleisch, who calls on each per-
son after he has made a telephone contact.
He also fills in as a substitute driver, quite
often. Marion Shaw, the treasurer keeps the
bills paid up to date.

Twice a year a schedule is sent out to each
driver, reminding him or her of delivery
dates. Once a week a list of those receiving
the meals, a list of the week's drivers also 10
envelopes listing the names and addresses
of each recipient, are delivered to the dieti-
tian's office.
Everyone 'in connection with the program
is a volunteer, and no-one receives pay of
any kind. The pleasure and help given is suf-
ficient rpvvord Thncp whn rp,plcre' the meals
are so grateful. For many,.the volunteer is
the only one they see that day.
Drivers are needed. Call and offer to drive
once in three weeks. It only takes one hour
of your time.
I hope this will answer some of the ques-
tions which arise.
Sincerely,
Olive E. Knisley,

Pumpkin smashers
destroy family creation
To'kill a pumpkin.,.
On or about Friday, Oct. 25 at 8 p.m. some
of our community achievers removed a
pumpkin head from it's body and smashed it
on the other side of the street.
This act of murder caused great grief
among the family members who toiled so to
create it. It's a shame that a measly dollar
that can bring such joy to one can bring fun
or pleasure to the less fortunate. I only hope
it was worth it.
It's likely a waste writing this because the
people who performed this act aren't the
sort of persons who can read without great
difficulty.
