hockey
season
underway
The Goderich Shamrock Novice team
opened their 1985-86 season on October 12 in
Goderich against a weak Strathroy team.
In the home .opener Goderich won 5-1.
Goderich opened the scoring early in the
first period on a goal by Volland assisted by
Klages. •
In the second period Goderich scored
quickly on an unassisted goal by Hodge.
Strathroy tried to fight back with a goal of
their own to make it 2-1 for Goderich. Just
when it looked as though Strathroy was try-
ing to mount a come back Mcbride'scored
via a Hodge pass.
With the score 4-1 after two the Goderich
team knew they would have to keep the
pressure on going into the third period.
The Goderich team managed to keep the
Strathroy team off the board and managed
to add yet another nail,to the Strathroy cof-
fin. The goal was scored by Lumley from
Williamson. Goderich won the game 5-1.
On October 13 the Goderich Novice team
travelled to Exeter for their first road game
and won 4-0. Goderich got on the board early
with a goal by Meriam assisted by Mc-
• Cauley. The Goderich team skated well and
kept the Exeter team off the board.
The Goderich team didn't score in the re-
maining part of the first or in the entire se-
cond period. But in the opening moments of
the third period Goderich went up 2-0 on a
goal by McBride, assisted by Klages. A few
minutes later Klages added another goal
with Merriam assisting.
The final goal of the game for Goderich
came at the 9:57 mark of the period. The
goal was scored by McBride assisted by
Lumley.
On Saturday October 19 the Goderich
Novice team played at home against
Parkhill. The third game of the regular
season turned out to be closer than the two
previous contests. It was evident that
Parkhill came to play.
In the first period Goderich got on the
board first, off a goal by McLarty assisted
by Corriveau. Three minutes later Mcl,arty
scored r again assisted by Volland and
Klages.
In the second period Parkhill fought back
with a goal at the seven minute mark•of the
period. It remained 2-1 f(rr Goderich through
the remainder of the period.
However with the third period seconds old
Volland scored with Klages and Williamson
assisting. Parkhill would not give up and
they scored two goals of their own to make it
3-3 with minutes remaining in the contest.
Gilcrist got the winning goal for the
Goderich Novice team.
On October 20 the . o4eriCh Novice tear
skated into. Belmont with three Vvitns and no
losses. However when the game was over
they were handed their first, loss of the
season, 10-1.
In the first period Belmont got on the
board early and never looked back. In the
second period they added two more goals to
make it 3-0 after two periods.
In the third, Belmont registered seven
goals, while Goderich only managed to get
one. The lone Goderich goal was scored by
Corriveau, assisted by Klages.
Shamrock At®rs .
On October 12 the Goderich Atom team
opened its • 1985-86 season on home ice
against Strathroy. The game ended in a 4-4
tie.
Goderich opened the scoring in the first
period on a goal by Beange, assisted by In-
ghaM. Then at 8:02 of the period McLarty
scored with Phillips assisting.
The entire second period was dominated
by Strathroy. They managed to score three
goals to lead 3-2 after two.
In the third period Goderich scored two
goals in 43 seconds. The first Goderich
marker was scored by Volland unassisted.
The second goal was scored by Dickson, it
was also unassisted. It looked as though
Goderich was well on its way to winning the
game. When Strathroy scored with a little
under five minutes remaining in the game.
The score at the end of the game was tied 4-
4.
On October 19 the Goderich Shamrock
Atom team played Parkhill on home ice.
Goderich opened the scoring with the game
not even two minutes old, on a goal by
McLarty assisted by Beange. Goderich's se- •
cond goal of the game was scored by McLar-
ty with Jefferey assisting. ,Parkhill then
answered back with two goals to even things
up. But before the first period was over
Goderich would have three more goals to
their credit.
Goderich's third goal of the game was
scored by Ingham with Beange assisting.
Their fourth goal of the game was score by
Jeffery with McLarty assisting. The fifth
goal was scored by Dickson with Whelan
assisting.
In the second period Parkhill opened the
scoring to come within two of the strong
Goderich squad. Minutes later Goderich
widened the gap on a goal by Jeffery,
assisted by Mcl.arty. At the 9:33 mark of the
second, Goderich put the game out of reach,
when Wheeler scored, assisted by Hayter.
Goderich was leading 7-3 after two. In the
third period Ingham opened the scoring off a
pass from Wheeler. At that point it was 8-3
for the Goderich Atom team.
With minutes remaining in the third
period Parkhill tried valliantly to get back
into the game. They scored two quick goals,
but that was the best they could do as the
Goderich team won the contest 8-5.
On Sunday October 12 the Goderich Atom
team travelled to Exeter and won 2-1.
Goderich opened the scoring on a goal by
Hassock, assisted by Ingham. That Vvasthe
only goal of the first period and at the endief
one Goderich was. ahead 1-0. In the second
period Exeter tied the score. AI' the 10 52
mark of the third period Hayter scored what
proved to be the winning goal, with Jefferey
and Papple assisting.
Bantam team.
The Goderich Elevators Bantam team
travelled to Strathroy October 12. The game
was penalty filled with over 90 minutes in
penalties assessed. The majority of them
were assessed to the Goderich players.
The game was not even one minute old
when Thompson scored, with Glenn
assisting. Three minutes later Trebish
scored for the Bantams, with Alcock
assisting. That was the extent of the scoring
for the first period.
At the :47 second mark of period two Gar -
row scored, with Dewinter assisting.
Strathroy then followed suit with a goal of
their own to come within two. Goderich
opened the gap on goals by Garrow,
Dewinter and Alcock. Before the second
period was over Strathroy added another
goal.
It. was 7-2 after two periods. In the third
period Goderich scored early with Garrow
scoring his third goal of the game. Strathroy
added another goal to their cause but the
outcome was acadmic.
With five minutes left in the game Garrow
scored his fifth goal of the game. Goderich
went onto defeat Strathroy 9-3 in their first
game of the season.
On October 18 the Goderich Bantam team,
travelled to Exeter to play their second
game of the young hockey season.
Goderich opened the scoring in the first
period on a goal by Glew, assisted by Kelly
and Whetstone. Two minutes later Goderich
scored again on a goal by Garrow, assisted
by Glew. Goderich lead Exeter 2-0 after one.
In the second period Exeter opened the
scoring to pull to within one. Goderich then
added one of their own off of a shot by
Dewinter, assists went to Thompson and
Garrow. The Bantams then widened their
lead with a goal by Garrow, assisted by
Whetstone.
Trebish opened the scoring in the third
period for Goderich, Bowman and Kelly
assisted.
Goderich continued their domination of
the Exeter team with yet another goal at the
7:19 mark of the third period. Thompson
was credited with the goal, Garrow and
Dewinter assisted.
But with a little over six minutes to play in
the game, Exeter came alive and scored two
unanswered goals to pull to within three.
But it was too little too late as Goderich went
on to defeat Exeter 6-3.
The Goderich Bantam team played their
first game on home ice October 19 against
Parkhill. They won the penalty filled contest
6-2. Over 40 minutes in penalties were hand-
ed out during the game.
