Atoms squeak by Exeter to begin season The first puck was dropped on Saturday for many Goderich teams as the 1985-86 hockey season began. The Goderich Atom Shamrock team began their season with a 4- 4 tie with Strathroy. Goderich got on the board first early in the game off a goal by Jared Whalen assisted by Bill Ingham. Goderich added another goal late in the period to go out in front 2-0 after one. The goal scorer was Andrew McLary and was assisted by Mark Phillips. In the second period Strathroy fought back w Asn three unanswered goals and it was 3-2 after two periods. In the third period Jasorl- Volland tied things up for Goderich. Then Chris Dickson got an unassisted goal to put the Atoms up • by one. With a little under five minutes to play Strathroy hit the twine to even it up at 4-4 and that was the way it ended. On Sunday the Atoms travelled to Exeter. Goderich won the game 2-1 to capture their first victory of the young season. With the game not even two minutes old Sam Hosack scored for Goderich. He was assisted by Bill Ingham. That was the extent of the scoring for the first period and it was 1-0 after one. Exeter scored the only goal of the period and that evened things up at 1-1. In the mid- dle of the third period Jason Hayter got what proved to be the winning goal. He was assisted by Todd Papple. Goderich Peewee Lions roar into action In the seasons opener played at the arena last Saturday, the Goderich Peewee Lions were beaten 3-2 by Strathroy. For the third year in a row, these two teams have proven to be evenly matched. With five exhibitions games under their belt, Strathroy showed a definite advantage over the Lions, especially in the first period. Whenever a Lion was carrying the puck a Strathroy defender knocked the puck away. However, as the game wore on, the Lions were learning a new aggressive style of hockey involving "body contact". The score was tied at one after two periods. Strathroy scored late in the first period to tie the score. Lions Chris O'Neill scored early in the se - ,pond with Tim Harrison and Kevin Moss assisting. Two quick goals were scored by the visitors at the five minute mark of the third making it 3-1. The Lions tried to play catch-up hockey. They almost did in the last two minutes as Brian Lane scored from Chris O'Neill and Jean Paul Cauchi and with seconds remaining tried to tie the contest but, they fell short. The Lions will have a busy schedule this week as they travel to Exeter Wednesday. First Choice Auctions Agropole Realty Ltd. The No. 1 Team 529-7420 Get The Job Done Right!
