Ontario in At> dreadyyi ISE tae taidle 1 rcaslotnt, for stabitlzation progr,. am but tate .Cart= tletnen's:Association and th Canadian Cat-tlemen's Association asked•hlmtd'hold'off. Riddell, the Ontario agriculture minister, got annoyed, when he was criticized for the delay of stabilization. He was the guest speaker in his home riding at the Huron County federation of agriculture. "I want you to know, that as of the end of August, I was ready for stabilization," said the agriculture minister. - However, he said he was asked to hold off so federal agriculture minister John Wise could make a national stabilization pro- gram. Riddells' words heated up and he asked his audience several times if they wanted to know who had asked him to hold off. He said it was the Ontario Cattleman's Association, the Canadian Cattlemen's Association and verbal conversations with the pork producers. "It's not fair to be critical of the minister of agriculture, at least not this minister," said Riddell. He later apologized for getting annoyed. "I'm sorry I got annoyed. But obstacles are put in my way for no reason," he said. Riddell also commented that he wished other members of parliament were present so they could go back to Ottawa and tell Wise that farmers have "played around long enough". The comment Was in reference to Huron -Bruce MP Murray Car- diff who was absent from the meeting. Riddell did say that earlier conversations with his federal counterpart indicated there could be some program by the end of Oc- tober. "I'm not about to let Wise off the hook," he said. The agriculture minister has been making the rounds of federation meetings and fairs, including an incident last Tuesday when some tobacco farmers had to be taken away by police at the Norfolk County Fair. The class is going to the woods for an autumn walk on Friday. Danny W4lds made a life-sized person from his reading book. Her name is Jane. Now the class has two Janes. Grades 3 and 4 in Room 7 pressed leaves and fall flowers to make harvest wreaths for Thanksgiving this week. Kindergarten One made applesauce and talked about apples. Thanksgiving place mats were laminated for the class who took them home. The Brookside soccer teams performed very well at their regional tournament on Wednesday, Oct. 9. The senior girls won the championship pennant and the senior boys brought home the runner-up pennant. Both the boys' and girls' junior teams were also very competitive in their division. Congratulations to all the teams on their sportsmanship and high quality of play. Mrs. Graham's Grade 4 class had a nutritous luncheon Tuesday to help rein- force Canada's Food Guide. Hot dogs fresh vegetables, salads, orange juice and some sweets were enjoyed by all. On Friday the senior wing students were asked about their breakfast and lunch habits. The results will be available next issue as to Brookside's nutrition standards. Robertson students ceiebrate Eiu e Jays' Day BY HEIDI ZOETHOUT AND MICHELLE GLENN Robertson Roundup.... Strike 1, strike 2, strike 3, you're OUT! ! Blue Jays' Day at Robertson School started with the theme song. Some students, who were a little confused, wore other teams' hats and t -shirts. There was also a ball game between 8A ( who are No. 1) and 7B. The score was tied. The school's fund raising event was very successful. Thank you for your support. We sold 4449 items altogether. The school was very successful in the soc- cer tournament, senior and junior boys were •overall champs and the senior girls were runners-up. Students are getting ready for cross- country meet on Oct. 17, 1985. We would like to wish you a Happy Thanksgiving and here is a poem for you. THANKSGIVING POEM "IF YOU WERE GOD..." BY J.H.I.. TROUT if you were God and God were you, And He were given a holiday To go to church to praise and pray, And then He feasted and stayed away. Without a thought of God or prayer, Or thanks for all your loving care - If you were God and God were you, Say — what would you do' If you were God and God were you, And a nation set the day for prayer. But only one had time to spare For every 100 that didn't care — Would you believe they were sincere. And bless that nation again next year? If you were God and God were you, Say — what would you do' If you were God and God were you And millions professed a faith in you As giver of all good gifts and true, But never said, "Thanks" or thought it due. But when trouble came their way Expected your help without delay - If you were Gbd and God were you. Say - what would you do'. Property tax grants and sales available to many Ontario seniors BY JACK RIDDELL HURON -MIDDLESEX M.P.P. The Ontario Ministry of Revenue mailed Property Tax Grant applications to eligible seniors in late August. The Property Tax Grant of up to $500 per household is paid to seniors who pay property tax either directly or through rent. The first installment of the 1985 Property Tax Grant was mailed in April. To qualify for the final installment eligible seniors must submit an Ontario Pro- perty Tax Grant application to the Ministry of Revenue by December 31, 1986. Applications have been mailed to those who became Old Age Security recipients before July, 1985. Seniors who turn 65 and receive the Old Age Security pension ( OAS) during the latter half of 1985 will receive ap- plications no later than January, 1986. Those who think they're eligible, but who do not automatically receive a 1985 Ontario Property Tax Grant application should call the Ministry's Multilingual Information Centre. PROPERTY TAX GRANT CHEQUES The Ministry will begin mailing the final Property Tax Grant installments on Oc- tober 25th. This cheque will be based on in- formation reported on the 1985 Ontario Pro- perty Tax Grant application. Seniors who turned 65 this year will get their 1985 Property Tax Grant in one pay- ment. To be eligible for the Property Tax Grant, the applicant must be a permanent resident of Ontario when the Ministry received the application for processing. A senior who leaves Ontario before that- date no longer QUEEN'S PARK qualities fur the gl-atiL. NURSING HOME RESIDENTS Residents of nursing homes subsidized through the Extended Care Program, homes for the aged and other institutions that do not pay property tax are not eligible for' the Property Tax Grant. However, if they moved to a tax-exempt prope,ty in 1985, they are eligible for a Property Tax Grant based on rent or property tax paid before moving. Similarly, nursing home residents who continue to maintairrtheir home may claim the Property Tax Grant if their home re- mains unoccupied during their stay in the nursing home and if they intend to return. SALES TAX GRANT The 1985 Sales Tax Grant of $50 will be dolled to all eligible Ontaro seniors on November 29th. To qualify, the senior must be a permanent resident of Ontario on that date. Seniors who haven't established their eligibility for the 1984 Sales Tax Grant through Old Age Security have until December 31, 1985 to file an eligibility ap- plication. Seniors who require further information should contact the Ministry's Multilingual Information Centre free of charge from anywhere in Ontario, dial 1-800-263-3960. t:
