GODERICH by TD The GDCI Junior Vikings recorded their third consecutive win in Huron -Perth Conference football action by defeating the Stratford Central Rams 21-7 Thursday in Stratford. The Vikings had to work hard to win this one. There was no scoring in the first half but the Vikings broke loose, moving the ball by running inside in the second half. Bill Trebish scored the game's first touchdown on an eight yard blast in the third quarter and then Wayne Nivins rambled 76 yards on a trap play for another major. The Viking defensive crew of linemen Jason Millian, Mark Stokes, Bob Pellow, Sean Gosse and Tim Connolly, the linebackers Rod Nurse, Jeff MacDonald and Byron Bowman and the defensive backs John Kalbfleisch, Larry Leppington and Scott Garrow all played well. The Vikings make another trip to the Classic City this Thursday, this tirne to tangle with the Stratford Northwestern Huskies who are winless after their first three games. Stratford kicked a single point in the final quarter before the Vikings Mike Bush went 34 yards on a pass and run . play from quarterback Scott Garrow for another Viking touchdown. Jim Wright was successful on all three of his convert attempts for the Vikings. Late in the fourth quarter the Rams scored a 68 -yard touchdown on a pass and run, but the convert attempt was wide. The Rams had 11 first downs compared to the Vikings 13. Stratford completed a number of short passes and threatened with some long bombs, butcould not complete them even though the Ram receivers consistently got behind the Viking deep backs. There have been a number of rumors carr- culating around town about the somewhat less than friendly relationship that Goderich Minor Hockey was supposedlyhaving with the newly formed Goderich Junior C teain.. Charlie Boddy President of Goderich Minor hockey was disturbed to read of the supposed animosity between the two organizations. • , "We are not against the Junior team. Sure we don't have a Juvenile team and they are partly responsible. But so is the new CHA ruling that has moved allof the various age groups up one year. This has caused the col- lapse of many Juvenile teams across On- tario. "The only concern I have is what if a kid over 17 tries out for the team and doesn't make it. He doesn't have anywhere to play. But as far as we are concerned we do not have any animosity towards the Sailors and we wish them luck," Boddy said. Registration is down this year by about 15 per cent. Last year they had 215 players register and at this time between 180 and 190 have registered. If you would like to have your child play minor hockey there is still time. For further information on how to sign your child up • phone Sheila Papple at 524- 7680 or Dora Mae Kinahan at 524-4820. Tryouts the travelling teams have con- cluded and they begin play Saturday for the Atom, Peewee and Novice A teams. Perth victory The Viking offence totalled 401 yards. Bill Trebish, the Vikings leading rusher has gained a personal total of 458 yards rushing in his team's three league games. The Vikes were also able to use the pass effectively too. In his first three games quarterback Scott Garrow has completed 12 of 18 attempts for three touchdowns and he has yet to have a pass intercepted. The Vikings were hurt by penalties called against their special teams. They had touchdowns on the opening kickoff and a first half punt return called back for clipping infractions. Defense sacks Stratford quarterback three times by TO The GDCI senior Vikings had little trouble defeating the Stratford Northwestern Huskies here Thursday 42-0 in Huron Perth Conference football play. The game was a lacklustre affair, plagued by some rather inept officiating, but for the Vikings it was another step toward the improvement they will have to make to challenge for the Conference championship. The winless Huskies were not really much of a challenge but it was obvious the Viking offense has begun to gel. Kevin Beattie had another big game for the Vikes, again gaining over 200 yards. He had three touchdowns, including one on a 96 -yard run in the third quarter. The other two came on plays of 43 and 21 yards in the first half. Shawn Rahbek also had a good game carrying the ball. He gained 127 yards on 10 carries and has become a tough man for opposing tacklers to bring down. Defensive back Kevin Talbot was another Viking hero of the day lugging back two pass interceptions for touchdowns of 28 and 48 yards. The other Viking touchdown came on a one -yard slant by Kevin Feagan late in the fourth quarter. Ken Van Osch kicked a 35 -yard single and Shawn Larder was good on five of six convert attempts to account for the rest of the scoring. The Viking defence was impressive, holding the Huskies to a couple of big plays on the ground. The Vikes stopped the Huskies when they had a first and goal situation on the Goderich three -yard line in the first quarter. The Huskies also failed to complete a pass in the game. The Vikings either intercepted them or knocked them down. In addition to Talbot's two hie interceptions, Grant Garrow picked off an errant Stratford pass. The victory gives the Vikings a record of two wins and one loss in league play heading into their game this Thursday in Listowel with the I,ords. In their first meeting here last week the Vikings shutout the Lords 57-0.
