(photo by Susan Hundert- Festival announces new directors Artistic Director John Neville announced five distinguished names in Canadian theatre to serve as Associate Directors of the Stratford Festival. They 'are Douglas Campbell, Martha Henry, Richard Ouzou- nian, Guy Sprung and John Wood. These new Associate Directors are in addition to Tanya Moiseiwitsch and Tom Kerr whose appointments were announced earlier. In making the announcement, Neville ex- pressed his pleasure at being able to bring together this multi -talented group of senior artists: "I'm delighted at being able to an- nounce this team. Not only will they provide a welcome support system for artistic plan- ning but I know they will offer challenge and provocation and I'm particularly happy at the prospect of vigorous and rewarding challenge in our deliberations." "They are a truly catholic group, each of whom brings widely differing talents to the role of Associate D}rector, thereby opening up the artistic rr lkgement of the theatre to a broader varietyr'Qf..creative input. I'm enormously pleased at the opportunity to work with them." Richard Quzounian will direct the Festival Stage production of Shakespeare's Pericles. He has recently directed a highly successful revival of "Jacques Brel". This will be Ouzounian's first production for the Festival. Douglas Campbell will direct the Rodgers and Hart musical, The Boys From Syracuse. A member of the Festival's first Acting Company in 1953, Campbell has since been involved with more than 30 productions at Stratford. John Wood will direct Tom Stoppard's Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead. Formerly Artistic Director of the Neptune Theatre in Halifax and Artistic Director of English Theatre at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa, Wood has directed several pro- ductions at Stratford over six seasons. One of Canada's major talents as an ac- tress and a leading player at the Festival over many seasons, Henry, is also a director of note. Her most recent production is "A Moon For The Misbegotten" at Toronto's Tarragon Theatre. Artistic Director of Toronto Free Theatre, Guy Sprung, was associated with the Festival as a director in the 1982 and '83 seasons. Neville also announced today that negotiations are underway with Alan Scarfe to direct Shakespeare's Cymbeline and with Brian Rintoul to direct Shakespeare's Henry VIII in the Festival's 1986 season. Cakewalk will be back The Blyth Festival's 1984 blockbuster premiere production of CAKE -WALK by Colleen Curran will be back in 1986, Artistic Director Katherine Kaszas announced. CAKE -WALK will open in mid-August as the final production of the Blyth Festival's 1986 season, and will then go on tour during September and October. Described by reviewers .as a "recipe for sheer enjoyment", "sweet` entertainment", "pleasing concoction", and "has ingre- dients for Blyth hit", CAKE -WALK was the top seller of the Festival's 1984 season, averaging over 91 percent capacity! The ac- tion takes place in a hotel in a small town, during the annual Canada Day celebrations. Five unlikely contestants are pitted against each other in the cake -walk com- ARTS• petition - and their attempts to win, by fair means or foul, provide the hilariously funny plot. CAKE -WALK went on to be produced in 1985 at the Kawartha Sumner Festival and will be showcased by the Blyth Festival at the Ontario Arts Council's Contact 86 this month. Those wishing further details on the 1985 tour of CAKE -WALK are asked to contact the General Manager, Brenda Doner, at ( 519) 523-4345.
