The township boasts an excellent outdoor recreational facility in the Naftel's Creek Conservation area. Naftel's Creek Conservation Area was ac- quired by the Maitland Valley Conservation Authority in two stages during 1981 and 1982. The 48.83 hectares which make up the total area are located on the est side of Highway 21, six kilometers south of the Town of . , e reforestation (dine property, which .. was initially started in the 1930's, was later continued on by each succeeding landowner and has produced a woodlot which is ex- tremely diverse. At the time of the authority's acquisition, this property was already serving a number of functions for the local community. The extensive trail system which leads to allsec- tions of the property is throughout the year, but most prominently by cross-country ski- ing enthusiasts. Naftel's Creek itself, which has been classified as a class one trout stream, also provides an excellent oppor- tunity for extensive recreation (low popula- tion per hectare). The area was named in officially in Februaryof 1983. The name Naftel's Creek was decided on for two reasons; the reference to Naftel's Creek as found in Belden's Historical Atlas of Huron County in 1879, and the existing association by the general public to the name Naftel's Creek. MASTER PLAN To encourage the use of the Naftel's Creek area to fullest advantage, the MVCA has come up with a master plan for the park's development. The 448.3 hectares which make up Naftel's Creek Conservation Area will be developed as a natural Environment Conservation area. The market area for the properthas been designated as an approximate. 15 km drive from the property_. It is not the goal of the MVCA to increase this market area substantially as the primary goal for the area is to provide proper resource manage- ment, not an added recreational facility. The resource management, which will be undertaken on the property will focus on the woodiot and plantation managment Each specU},c ve$ita [ zone,...,. bat infra "Hosed' on'"tti t of Wegi>ot'iresen ;its contribution to the property's groundwater capabilities and its potential for both im- proved wildlife habitat and educational trail demonstrations. The goal for the stream improvement pro- gram will be to maintain Naftel's Creek as a class one trout stream, by focusing on the water quality and erosiaon control aspects. It is not the intent of the authority to stock theis creek, or to further promote this pro- perty for increased fishing opportunities. The goal for the educational component will be to promote a better understanding of soil and water conservation practices, self - guiding trail system, which will focus on the resource management being undertaken on the property. Tide recreational objective for the proper- ty will be to improve upon the already ex- isting facilities required for extensive forms of recreation (those activities which require low population per hectare i.e. cross- country skiing). This will include trail marking boardwalks and trail maintenance. The additional facilities required for the recreation program i.e. increased parking facilities, washrooms etc. will be added as the demand for these features warrant. rhemeW1. desOmpd 0S1 QC! 004Ing an a '.I*euse sectrthis, pioneerfeeliag.
