GODERICH SIGNAL -STAR, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 19, 1985—PAGE 3B
Transport team rebuilt
BY BREWSTER
Boyes Transport, a new business in town
managed by Bob McCormick, has assumed
sponsorship of the ex -Century 21 slow -pitch
team. The players have responded with a 5-
1-1 record for 11 points and a share of first
place!
The Boyes Transport team is under the
very capable direction of player/coach Jim
Habel, and team rep. Rob Jerry. Their cap-
tain and inspirational leader is lead-off bat-
ter Bob Allen.
Asked what has turned this team around,
Rob Jerry claimed that the addition of
Barney Purser, and switch of John Orr have
strengthened their outfield tremendously!
The acquisition of Paul Padfield and Rick
Simonoto has given more strength to the in-
field. Bill Rahbek and Jim Habel provide a
strong pitching rotation, and the bats of
Simonoto, Rahbek, John Marshall and Jim
Shropshall have speaked their teams
average of 9 runs per game.
In the four games since our new MVP for-
mat was introduced, Rick Sim oto has
been chosen three times and Barney Purser
once, to substantiate these claims. In all
honesty though, says Jerry, the whole team
is playing good ball. We are relaxed, confi-
dent and having fun even though we know
this story will jinx us. Other players on the
roster include Dave Denomme, Evert Mid -
del, Doug and Gord Wray, Ray Black, Cec
Fields and John Corriveau.
Boyes Transport, formerly Century 21,
formerly Meneset No. 2 and before that
Meneset No. 1, is a story of rebuilding that
should well serve as an example to many
other teams. The original Meneset No. 1
team, after winning two league titles, split,
to become Meneset No. 2 and the Bears.
The latter has since changed their name
to Ideal Supply, and their record needs no
review.
The Meneset No. 2 immediately' fell to
"C" division, but with a determined effort
over the last five years, have battled their
way back to respectability. Only John Orr,
Doug Wray, Dave Denomme and Cec Fields
remain from the original squad.
From an executive point of view, this
team is totally dedicated to our slowpitch
league. They are fully cooperative and sup-
portive when it comes to league functions.
Their leagueesponsibilities re fulfilled
without reminIfer or hesitation, They are
one, of many, That make our job that much
easier. We must thank Rob Jerry for ex-
cellent work in his role as team rep. Though
their hold on first place may fade as the
season progresses, I, for one, am impressed
by their organization and achievements to
date! Best of luck in the upcoming weeks
and months!
At the league level we had several upsets
this week_ but you know... with this league,
nothing is really an upset any more!
Ideal Supply and Goderich Chrysler slug-
ged it out to a game that featured grand
slams by Ed Brunk, Dave (Spike) Sykes and
Brian Good as well as five other home runs.
Much to Chrysler's regret, they only got 17
runs while Ideal Supply pounded out 25.
Sunnys edged Murphys 6-3, while Dear-
born finally hit the win column with a 22-13
thumping of Local 1863. Larry Million went 2
tor 3 and Tim Frawley crawled in for a tri-
ple during a 12-5 loss to Little Bowl.
Goderich Elevators drilled Garb & Gear
18-3 on the strength of a 10 run 4th inning.
Ernies Roadhouse continued their winn-
ing ways with an 8-2 drubbing of the
bulldogs, but then read the paper jinx and
got hosed 8-4 by Goderich Nissan.
Boyes Transport topped the Gators 12-1,
Goderich Chrysler muffled the BBs 10-3 and
Canadian Tire picked up two big wins, 8-6
over Coyotes and 11-8 over the Bulldogs. In a
score that is still rumour (...fine!...) Sifto
shafted the Renegades 19,1.
The Synonyms used for "defeat" in the
above, and, in weeks to come, are to be
credited to John Smallwood's Grade 9
English classes at GDCI. Thanks guys (and
girls)... I didn't know that there were 186 dif-
ferent ways to describe "Beat"! I'll use as
many as I can in weeks.to come.
Team reps have their last reminder of our
league meeting on June 24 at 9:00 p.m. in the
rec office (attention Renegades! )
You will also notice that last Sunday game
results, do not appear in this summary.
From now on, you will only receive updates.
of the games played the previous Sunday to
Thursday. Only in that way do I have
enough time to write a summary that is
worth reading.
I hope you'IL be out to watch the Little
Bowl tournament this Friday and Saturday
featuring eight mens and eight ladies slow -
pitch teams at the Agricultural Park. Until
then, don't charge a fly ball before thinking.
Just ask me"about it!
