Martha remembers frog hunting at the beach
Things are really changing at the Harbor.
The "Board Walk" is actually lust THAT
and it now stretches from one end of St.
Christopher's Beach to the South Pier at the
'Old Beach', connecting the two
playgrounds.
I was very surprised to see so much
gravel instead of the sand, but even though
it changes every year - stony or clear - you
take what you get! Every year our 'Boys'
have had to work hard to make it nice and
although I have never spent any time there,
my large family has enjoyed it.
When I was a youngster Lakes St. Clair or
Erie were the nearest patches of water - I
saw one of them at the Sunday school picnic
- once a year! So I am not a swimmer even
though I love being near the water.
November of '46 was my introduction to
Goderich. Icy cold winds, the roar of the
lake day and night - I wasn't -too happy with
it all.
But the Spring! We lived just around the
corner of Wilson St. and we used the end of
Britannia Rd. path to the beach. It was the
scenic route - believe me - and we slid - SLID
down the path - you couldn't stop - got alI
wet, but it was fun. From then on that path
was well used.
There was just a short piece of narrow.
roaddown there then - if you took the car.
The trees hung over the path and the stones
filled it.
The beach, then, was nice and sandy
mainly because, nearby, there was an old

TOO LATE TO CLASSIFY
dock that stretched out into the water. You
couldn't walk on it as it was worn down to
the supports which you could barely see.
But, as a friend was saying - this and the old
"sand bar" that was a little farther down,
saved the beach.
I called it a 'sand bat'. It was actually a
stone bar! 4 st below Britannia Rd. It stret-
ched many yards out into the lake and had
cobblestones in ALL sizes, all over! It was
marshy near the road and you could hear
the big bullfrogs croaking and the shallow
water slapping on the beach.
I was told the frogs were the biggest you'd
ever see - hut I had never seen any. One day
I made up my mind I would sneak up on
them - I even took my camera.
So, I carefully eased my way from one
lump of earth to another - I could -hear them
talking - I was even getting my feet wet. I
eased in closer - must have been right on
top, almost, when a darned little red -winged
blackbird started clicking every time I took
a step.
Finally all I saw was the splash - no frogs!
Was I ever mad. Now that I think about it, I
must have been crazy to even try such a
stunt, Many years later that whole stone
'bar' was removed.
There were plans for the big,building- for
pre -water treatment. Many of you recall the
old one with its high -in -the -sky chimney -
that nice little building, always so neat, you
drove around and around it.
There were all the other buildings along
one side - facing the dock. One that always
made me smile was a little old backhouse,
that leaned so badly, behind one of the little
houses. I don't know how the rest of the
places made out - often wondered about
that!
The little "treats" store is still there but
all the others are gone. Think of all the good
times you had in 'Bei-ts' place. If they had
K(1
ever served hamburgers there it could have L,
ben the start of the McDonald's chain. 2i
That was the highlight of your day at the
beach - cones and stuff. The change -rooms
were there too - all gone - but fun memories!
The kids of those days are mostly grand- '
parents now, but they will never forget how
they learned to swim there and how Bert
tested them by their swimming across the
harbor and back. They were all good swim- -
mers and good sailors too.
Now, they're all' good kids, scattered all
over Canada and other countries. But they
still try to get 'home' as often as possible.
The Chases - Abe and Muffin - had their
son, his wife and nice family home for a
short time from the West. Things were sure
lively for a while. But then, that is one lively
family. Love them!
Have a care, enjoy each day.
Love, Martha.
