Businesses on Bayfield
celebrate anniversaries
A building boom is much in evidence
along Hayfield Road these days as
McDonald's. Beckers and Home Hard-
`v:.rc stores are currently under con-
.,truction in the vicinity of Suncoast Drive.
But while the area welcomes new
developn>.ent, there are two businessmen
on Bayfield Road who have anchored the
business community in that area and are
observing significant anniversaries in the
next few weeks.
The week marks the 20th anniversary of
the opening of the Candlelight Restaurant
on Bayfield Road and on .July 4th, Bert and
Winnifred Squire will mark the 20th an-
niversary of Squire Gifts.
Constructed in the summer of 1965, the
Candlelight Restaurant was known as the
Pizza Patio until 1972. In 1974 the business
was purchased by (:us Balkouras who had
owned the Club Grill Restaurant on
Kingston Street before moving out to the
Bayfield Road location.
A graduate of Fanshawe College's Hotel -
Motel Management Program, Gus recalls
that the Candlelieht w:oo the last hoildinu
on Highway 21. -He - welcomes the new
development on Highway 21 and only plans
to expand his own facility slowly as town
growth warrants.
SQUIRE GIFTS
Squire Gifts on Highway 21 beside the
Candlelight Restaurant will provoke
nostalgia for many residents. of Goderich
as the business is housed in a former band -
shell.
Squire's uncle Hobert Standish build the
banstand for the town in 1927 in com-
memoration of the 100th anniversary of its
founding, In an effort to preserve the
historic' structure, Squire had the bands-
tand moved to its present location on
Highway 2.1 in ;May, 1965 and on July 4th he
opened Squire (rifts.
A long-time supporter of the tourist in-
dustry in the town of Goderich, Squire left
Champion Road Machinery tri 1977 after 35
years of service to devote his energies to
the new business with his wife Winnifred.
In corruncmoratioro of the town's 150th
birthday celebrations in 1977 the Eskimo
Art Gallery was added downstairs.
Farm Credit
Corporation
lowers
interest rates
Agriculture Minister John Wise today an-
nounced that interest rates charged by
Farm Credit Corporation (FCC) will go
down immediately. The new rates are the
lowest the Corporation has charged since
October 1979.
Loans under the Shared. Risk Mortgage
program are now set at 11-1/2 per cent,
down form 12 per cent. The Corporation's
five-year fixed interest term mortgages are
set at 11-7/8 per cent, a decrease from 12-1/2
ner cent. The rate for 10 -year fixed terms is
12-3/8 per cent, down from 13-1/4 per cent.
Twenty-year fixed term mortgages carry an
interest rate of 12-1/2 per cent, a reduction
from 13-1/2 per cent. The previous interest
rate change was on May 6, 1985.
Farm syndicate loans for the joint pur-
chase of machtery and buildings by a
group of three or more farmers are
available at an interest rate of 11-7/8 per
cent, reduced from the previous rate of 12-
1/2 per cent.
"The decline in the cost of funds
demonstrates the growing confidence of
Canada's business community," said Mr.
Wise.
"But the farm credit issue remains
serious. That is why I was happy to receive
the recommendation of the Bruce -Grey debt
review pilot project six days before the
Federal Budget was tabled. I am currently
reviewing the recommendations and seek-
ing the advice of members of the FCC Ap-
peal Boards.
"In addition,4 want to consult my provin-
cial colleagues in order to be able to identify
new programs to assist those farmers who
are, facing financial difficulty," ,added Mr.
Wise.
