Goderich Council protests
de -indexing for pensioners
After receiving more than 80 complaints
from local senior citizens, Goderich coun-
cil will send a telegram to Prime Minister,
Brian Mulroney and Huron -Bruce -MP
Murray Cardiff protesting ,the proposed
de -indexing of old age pensions in the re-
cent federal budget.
"Seniors are quite upset•about it and the
federal government can come to some
other means of cutting. the deficit other
than hurting seniors," said Coun. Jim
Sear'is.
Coun. Dori Wheeler , suggested the
telegram would be stronger if it was sent
on behalf of Goderich's seniors. He also
suggested following the telegram with a
petition signed by local pensioners. .
' "Everyone I've talked to on the street is
concerned about it." said Deputy -Reeve
John Doherty .
Arena sound, beach and
bleachers may be
improved through ON
Improvements to the plain beach, ac-
coustical treatment for the arena and a
new bleacher between the ball diamonds
at Agriculture Park may be part of the
soft -service component of the next Ontario
Neighbourhood Improvement Program
(ONIP).
The town's parks and waterfront con-
sidered options for the next phase of the
021Q,999 ON_IP program that will continue
over the next three years. Thi conunilv.e
learned that up to $160,000 will be available
for soft services or recreational purposes.
Recreation director Jane Netzke told the
committee the board has a few urgent pro-
jects in mind that could be pursued under
the program.
"Our first pridrity is the_uenn ac-
coustics," she said. "We've had com-
plaints about the sound since the arena
was rebuilt and it's used for a lot more ac-
tivities than hockey and figure skating. We
have built a sound room and bought some
equipment the last few years."
Netzke estimated, from work done in
other arenas, that it would cost $50,00(1 to
$60,000 to get good sound in the arena.
She added that the second priority was to
build a new bleacher and storage facility
between the two ball diamonds at
agriculture park.
"The fasthall learmp pipeiitive has met
with us and they have offered to finance a
'safer, better looking bleacher between the
diamonds," Netzke said. "It would be
made of concrete, have proper seating and
would contain 0 storage area underneath."
Chairman John Doherty and ad-
ministrator Lara' McCabe suggested the
men's fast ball lettguf should not have to
contribute considering the facility is
