Real estate group donates
$20,000 to devastated area
On ario's real estate professionals are
givi g an initial emergency donation of
$20,000 to the tornado devastated areas of
central Ontario.
Cheques were presented to officials in
Barrie and Orangeville, Friday, June 7 by
representatives .of the Ontario Real Estate
Association Foundation.
A news conference was held at the Barrie
Venture Inn (Hwy. 400 and Hwy. 27) at 11
a.m. where Barrie city officials and disaster
relief officers will receive 'a cheque for
$15,000. Walter Dean, an Orillia-area real
estate broker and a past president of the On-
tario Real Estate Association (OREA) and
George Worrall a regional vice president for
the Association and Barrie -area broker,
presented the real estate donation. Later
that afternoon, a further amount of $5,000
was presented to officials in Orangeville.
Representatives of both the Barrie and
Orangeville Real Estate Boards were in at-
tendance.
Noting the terrible destruction of lives and
property, Ontario's real estate professionals
started making arrangements for the dona-
tion on- Monday 'morning, Dean said. He
noted further that a number of OREA
members suffered during the tornado
through injuries, loss of homes and loss of
business premises.
The OREA Foundation was established in
1967 as a centennial project of the industry.
In recent years, the Foundation has..provid-
ed funds for tornado disasters in the
Woodstock area and floods in various parts
of the province as well as restoration of
heritage buildings and various other corn -
.
,unity projects.
The Ontario Real Estate Association is
composed of 30,000 brokers and sales
representatives in 48 local real estate
boards across the province. They represent
more .than 80 percent of all real estate
license holders in Ontario and more than 50
percent of all licensees in Canada.
Hydro revenue from_
\ electricity exceeds $4 billion
Increased. electricity sales and revenues,
combined with continued control of
operating cosi.,, ,u re Cutario Hydro. an im-
proved financial position in 1984.
In its 1984 Annual Report, released today,
Hydro reported that revenue from electrici-
ty sales increased by about $400 million to
$4.2 billion. This reflected growth in Ontario
energy sales of almost six per cent and
rc-venue-from-power exports -of more than
$400 million.
'These factors, along with the operating;
performance of our nuclear units, resulted
in a very favorable net income position.
"Chairman Tom Campbell said. The
outlook for the future is also favorable. On-
tario industries and residents will continue
to enjoy the advantage of low cost power,;as
rates are riot expected to rise above the rate
of inflation over the course of this decade."
llydro's net income for the year was $575
million, an increase of $103 million over
1983.
I)urine, the year, the amount of Tong -term
debt Issued by the corporation declined by
14 per cent from 1983. This was due to the
col nbindtion of higher net income and lower
requirements for funds as nialor con-
struction projects such as the_ Rru(i.
Nuclear Power Development and the
Pickering Nuclear Generating Station
neared completion.
In 1984, Ontario Hydro took delivery of
about $910 million worth of goods and ser-
vices, and awarded another $816 million in
new contracts. Roughly 85 per cent of these
new orders. were -placed with Canadian coil l--
panies, the majority of which are lck•ated in •
Ontario.
Other highlights of the year:
+ Hydro supplied a total of 122.9 billion,
kilowatt-hours of energy; 33 per cent of the
total was provided by nuclear generation. 3(1
per cent each by hydroelectric and fossil -
fired, and the balance was purchased.
+• The Bruce A Nuclear Generating Sta-
tion achieved a capacity factor of 93.8 per
cent; a record unmatch&1 by any other
multi -unit station in the world.
+ Two new nuclear units were placed in
service, Bruce Unit 6 and Pickering Unit 6.
+ A pilot project was undertaken to test a
new, $2.4 million acid gas scrubber on one of
the :300 megawatt units at Lakeview Ther-
mal Generating Station.
