Lawn Bowling club opens with
many local officials present
The official opening of the Goderich Lawn
Bowling Club took place on June 7 with a
good crotvd in attendance.
The singing of 0 Canada was led by Ralph
Henderson with Ilia Worsell at the piano.
Prayer was conducted by the Rev. Art
Young followed by a welcome to everyone
by the President Norma Hazlitt. She ex-
pressed her sincere thanks to those who had
contributed so much of their time and effort
in seeing the completion of this beautiful
facility.
Mayor Eileen Palmer spoke briefly and
mentioned the hard work and planning that
had gone into the building of the clubhouse.
She congrattilated the members on such a
fine facility and expressed her best wishes
for the success of the bowling club in the
years,qteirri.
Other members of the town council were
represented by Harry Worsell and Larry
McCabe. Each of these men had contributed
greatly to this project.
President Norma introduced Jack
McDonald chairman of the men's division of
District No. 4 and Helen Haynes, chairlady
of the ladies division of District No. 4. Both
spoke briefly and added their congratula-
tions and best wishes.
The president then read the names of the
various committees for the coming season
and asked for full co-operation from the,
members.
After the ribbon cutting ceremony Rev.
Art Young offered prayer and the meeting
closed, with everyone invited into the
clubhouse where a Buffet Table was set with
sandwiches and large Bowls of Punch.
Large glass bowls filled with fresh
strawberries decorated the table. These
were a contribution of President Norma. A
lovely centerpiece graced the table, a
generous gift of Elsa Haydon who was
unable to attend. Murray Cardiff could not
be present so a beautiful picture of the
Queen was sent by him to be hung in the
clubhouse. The Worsell Bros. donated a
large plant to the club which will add great-
ly to the decor.

ROUND 'N ABOUT
VVITH MARTHA
RATHBURN
Hi everybody! Pip back from Florida.
I had quite a busy winter, helping with
three big art shows and keeping up with all
the things happening at the Sarasota Art
Centre. I also started two groups of art
lessons in portraiture, which is som6thing
I've always wanted to do.
These lessons were in Venice ( 20 miles
south of us) so I was down there two or three
times a week. The highway driving certain-
ly kept me on my toes. •
The weather was beautiful down there and
there was no big freeze this year, but very
little rain either.
I am happy to be home again. For a
coupld of weeks I had trouble recalling
names and streets which is pretty inconve-
nient when you know where you want to go
but have to figure out how to get there.
I had forgotten how much fun the garage
and yard sales could be. I think of these
sales as a treasure hunt. You get your in,-
structions from the want ads of the Signal
Star and away you go. I'm sure I went
through a quarter of a tank of gas trying to
find the first one but then I lined them up so I
didn': retrace* my route quit'et, often. Do
you think we could convince the -ad-takers' to
line these sales up according to the map?
Good idea!
The things you see or find at these yard
sales are often memory joggers. You hear
people telling how their grandparents had •
one 'just like that.' Or you find something
you've wanted for years for a fraction_of it's
original cost.
I have often thought of our trip to Expo '67
in Montreal and wished I'd brought back a
souvenir. Well, I found a nice small tray
with the Pavilion of Canada picture on it for
only 10 cents at a yard sale. I was tickled
pink. It has very little ruse on it. I'll just
spray it and it will seem like new again even
after 28 years.
We went to Expo with, son Doug and
Madeline and five greenlins. We found a
good campground not far from Expo and we
had lots of equipment including a jim-dandy
magic cooker that gave up the best roast in
a few minutes or mouth-watering stews we
all eakyed.
Can you picture four adults and five kids
in one tent? Somehow it never seemed too
crowded.
Each day we spent at Expo we planned a
meeting place and I was in charge of the
twin's, Bill and Bob who were about six
years old. The boys were very smart, hav-
ing spent time in England, France and Ger-
many.
It was a treat and an education to squire
them around. I know I learned a lot of
things that they already knew.
That great, wide, wonderful world of Ex-
po, I'm sure, will always be remembered by
thousands.
Besides the little tray I found a
° Wedgewood plate of our parliament
buildings, Mounties and all.
I've added a few more plates to mY collec-
tion and have had fun talking to old friends I
run into as I make my way through all the
treasures to be found at these sales.
At Maitland Manor a Strawberry Social
and Balloon -Off will be held on Thursday,
June 20th from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. You
are invited to join us. Monies raised will be
donated to the Alzheimer Society for
research into the cause and treatment of
Alzheimer's disease. The "Balloon -Off" is a
fun project. Helium filled balloons are
purchased for 50 cents each. Whoever has
the balloon that goes the longest distance,
and the person who finds it, both receive a
prize. Please plan to come and take part.
Other happenings at Maitland Manor this
month include the birthday party for
residents celebrating their birthdays in
June. They include Helen Fulford, Ivan
Carter, Lillian Armstrong, Les Pentland,
Jean Chowen, Jean Riseborough, Mary
Rowed and Elsie Jackson. Families and
friends are invited to arrend the birthday
party on Wednesday, June 26 at 2:00 p.m.
Thanks are expressed to the Maple Leaf
Chapter, IODE who came into the home last
month to help celebrate Queen Victoria's
Birthday assisted by the GDCI Jazz Choir,
under the leadership of Eleanor Robinson.
The residents were also fortunate to have
the MacKay Choristers and The Foghorns
visit and entertain. Thanks to all of you!
