FAMILY NEWS
students receive awards
from MVA for contest
In a special presentation ceremony at the
Wingham District office of the Ministry of
Natural Resources (MNR) on Friday May
24, iuL:al students received awards for their
outstanding achievement in the district's
poster competition. The contest, open to
Grades 5 and 6 students in Huron and Perth
Counties, was a co-operative effort between
the MNR and the Ausable-Bayfield and
Maitland Valley Conservation Authorities.
Heid in conjunction with National Wildlife
Week, the theme was The Key to Con-
servation: Responsible Stewardship.
Guests attending the event included
General Manager Bryan Howard and Com-
munity Relations Chairman George
McBride of the Maitland Valley Con-
servation Authority, and Gordon Johnson,
Chairman of the Ausable-Bayfield Con-
servation Authority,
Renowned Canadian wildlife artist Glen
Loates, 11 gham District's Wildlife Con-
servation Ambassador for 1985, presented
the awards. -The students, all from Howick
Central School, included Carolyn Winkel,
Corrie Fatt, Brenda Baumgarten, Philip
Baumgarten and Ty Roberts. Each partici-
pant was given a personally autographed
Loates print. The school received an
autographed, framed Loates print, a copy of
Mr. Loates' book "A Brush With Life" and a
framed copy of the National Wildlife Week
poster. In addition, District Manager Andy
Houser presented the school with an M.N.R.
plaque.
Glen Loates, speaking of conservation, his
art, and children, said, "It's deeply gratify-
ing for me to see how kids respond to my pic-
tures. I'm sure Walt Disney must have felt
the same sense of satisfaction when he saw
how children reacted to his cartoon
characters; I know I thought they were a
fairy tale come to life. Kids today are much
more practical, but that's another dimen-
sion, and it's terrific. They're remarkably
well attuned to environmental issues; 'I
they'll come up to me at shows and tell me
that they hope my pictures will help save the
little animals. Believe me, that's a great in-
spiration to keep on painting."
