high -scoring action in Wq171@ris SLOW pitch Recent action in the Goderich Women's Slowpitch League, saw the Oltimers bash Not Much, 21-2, in a game played May 9, in St. Marys. The Ottimers combined for 24 hits in the game, (including two triples by Jean Cruickshank) which ended after five innings under the "Mercy rule". On May 13, the Oldtimers played to a 4-4 draw with the Hot Shots. The Oldtimers jumped ahead with a three -run first inning, but the Hot Shots came back with three of their own in the fourth. Each team managed, to score only once more in the game, which went the regulation seven innings. Sifto outbatted Brtmo's 13-7, in a hard- hitting May 13 contest. Outside of a nine -run barrage by Sifto in the fourth frame, the game was a close one. T -railing 6-2 into the seventh- inning, Meneset broke loose for five runs in the last at -bat to edge the Double Blue 7-6 on May 14. Nile outlasted Mac's Milk, in a 13-8 slugfest on May 16. Nile kept up a steady of- fensive pace to record the win. Mac's Betsy Rivera, had the games' big hit with a second inning home run. On May 20, Bruno's -downed Double Blue 8-6, in a game played at the GDCI diamond. Sifto squeezed by the Go-for-ettes, 9-8 on May 21. Hot Shots blasted Not Much 19-1 on May 22. Also on May 22, Ron's Shell blanked the Go-for-ettes 8-0. A six -run burst in/the fifth helped Mac's top the North End Marina squad 14-6 on May 23. Diane Little hornered in the sixth inning, to help Bruno's, who played minus their coach. beat Meneset 11-7, on May 23. Not Much forfeited a game to North End Marina, when a third -inning injury to Chris Gautreau left them short-handed. The teams finished the game on a "fun" basis anyway. Ron's Shell clobbered Meneset 14-3 in a May 21 contest played at Meneset Park. GODERICH SIGNAL -STAN, WEDNESDAY, MAY 29,1985 ---PAGE!; 3A Former Goderich Jr. B player had up and down hockey career The following item appeared in the Globe and Mail under the heading "Where are They Now?" by Paul Patton. Long- time residents of Goderich might remember Bob Leduc, who played Junior B hockey with the Goderich Sailors, prior to turning pro with the Toronto Toros of the now -defunct World Hockey Association. BOB LEDUC Hockey Left winger with the Ottawa Nationals and Toronto Toros of the World Hockey Association between 1972 and 1975; playing coach of the Toros in 1975. Career record - 47 goals, 66 assists in 157 games as a player, 21-16-1 as a coach. Leduc; a native of Azilda, near Sudbury Ont., won the Ontario high school wrestl- ing championship but failed to make the Hamilton Red Wings in Junior A hockey. He played Junior B at Goderich. Lou Pieri, who operated the Providence team in the American Hockey League, helped sponsor the juniors at Sudbury by giving the team $500 and, a set of practice sweaters and socks. The team used $350 of this to buy Leduc from Goderich, and he led the Nor- thern Ontario junior league in scoring. He spent eight years playing in the American League at Providence and was the team's most valuable player in 1970, before join- ing Ottawa when the WHA began in 1972. The club moved to Toronto the next season, but his career almost ended in a freak accident during the training camp. A dolly, carrying the team's equipment, slip- ped loose while a trainer was moving it down a ramp. It pinned Leduc against a wall. He lost his big toe but was wearing shin pads, and they saved his left leg from being crushed. The Toros had won only four of their previous 14 home games (though they were 12-6-1 on the road) when Billy Harris resigned as coach Jan. 10, 1975, and Leduc took over. "To me, the WHA was a savior, " he said, " But I took the coaching job on the condition it was just temporary. I was,'cut with a broken wrist anyway. But I think I lost five years out of my career because of it. When Bob- by Baun became coach the next year, he didn't even want me at training camp." Leduc returned to Providence and, now 40, lives in nearby Masonville, R.I., where he operates a hardware store in neighboring North Smithsfield. He, still skates with the Providence Relics, an old-timers' team. "We played 80 games this year," he said in amazement. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * 1 NTNG_ Gas Rite third baseman Dave Durnin slaps his hand into an empty glove after a sharply -hit ground ball took a tough bounce and eluded him during a Goderich Men's Slowpitch League game Last Wednesday evening. (photo by Patrick Raftis Slowpitch adopts new MVP format BY BREWSTER Week two of the Goderich Men's Slowpitch League season is over. Complaints are scarce, blood pressure is still normal and the biggest shocker of the week was a Garb & Gear victory Well, let's take a look at the scoreboard. Ori Sunday, Garb & Gear pounded Local 1863 by a score of 17 - 3 — one of the few times that the name Garb & Gear has preceded the word pounded! Coyotes and Ideal Supply each • forfeited their game, to Sunnys and Century 21 respectively, because of tournament play. Little Bowl scored seven in the seventh in a close 9 - 7 come -from -behind victory over Murphy's Green Machine. Goderich Nissan mercied the Gators 17 to 2 in five. Earlier in the week, Ernies Roadhouse posted a surprising.7 - 1 victory over Goderich Elevators. Coyotes blasted . the Renegades 20 - 1 in five. Century 21 and Ultra Mar battled it out to a 3 -.3 draw, while Ideal Supply shafted Sifto 19 -1 in five. Canadian Tire scored three in, the seventh an a Carl Ziebarth homer to edge Sunnys 11 - 9 and Murphy's Green, Machine pulled off a minor upset with a surprising 7 - 6 win over Goderich Chrysler. Teams are reminded that double headers begin next week. With that, cornes the limits' No new inning should start with less than 10 minutes remaining in regulation time. The 7:45 game starts on time and without infield if necessary. During an executive meeting held Mav 22. Z Deadline for sports copy is 5 p.m.. Monday Something eAteryC-neer. it was decided to change the league MVP format to allow everyone in the league a chance to win. We started it last Sunday and it worked well. At the end of every game, each team is to select an MVP from their opponent's team. These names, one from each team, should be circled on the official game sheets that are submitted by the home team. It is the home team's responsibility to ensure that this is done. I will keep track of this and at our fall banquet, the MVP trophy ,will be presented to that person receiving the most votes over the. course of the season - regular and playoff. I will also try to recognize these people each week in this column. Game MVP's from Sunday were Tim Howe, Ed Vanden Broeck, Terry Shoemaker, Tag Sowerby, Carmon Fielder, and Gary Johnston. We hope that this will add a small, but new and interesting, dimension to our league. Goderich Nissan Little Bowl Century 21 Ernies Roadhouse Canadian Tire Bulldogs Coyotes Ideal Supply Ultra Mar Goderich Chrysler Garb & Gear Sunnys Murphys Green Machine Goderich Elevators Dearborn Renegades Sifto Gators Local 1863 The Gators' ball team have been given the grass cutting job at Signal Star diamonds. Every team had the option - they took it and will be paid $350 at the end of the season. They must be keen because the diamond looked suer on Sunday. The safety bag will not be available at the Signal' Star diamond for a few days. Ed Brunk is having it repaired and has design- ed a new anchoring system. As the Meg -Net is to -hockey, so too will be the Brunk Bag to Slowpitch. Home teams should bring an ex-' tra bag to use at first base, for a few days. The executive will meet again shortly to finalize our draft proposal. This will be your last chance for input. Put any suggestions you have, on paper, and submit to Brian Hamilton as soon as possible. That's about it for two weeks update. 'rune in next week for a summary of scores, MVPs and our league meeting. Until then .... play ball!
