An odd ode to a Firework Display
Dear editor,
Plans for the firework display are pro-
gressing well. Donations from business per-
sons, industry, service clubs and citizens
have been most gratifying. The more dona-
tions we receive before I make the final
order for the fireworks willenable us to
have a bigger and better display.
In case some of your readers may have
forgotten or may be unaware we are seeking
donations to help boost our aljowance from
the Town so that we may provide the best
display in this area I have penned an "Odd
Ode to a Firework Display" ... so, lug -holes
(ears) pinned back and harken!
On June 29th, just after ten o' the clock,
They'll gather in boats, on beaches and
dock,
On parkland, in lawnchair, on grass, sand or
in tree,
On rooftops, on vehicles, on bank and on
friendly knee.
They'll sit at the shoreline on rocks or large
LETTERS
boulders,
The infants will view over the crowds, sat on
loving shoulders.
Folks of all ages, from near and afar
Will gaze into the twilight and look for a
star.
They'll look for a sign in Huron's western
sky....
Then .. we'll light up! , and the
FIREWORKS will fly! t
Mad Hatters, Witches Cauldron and Devil's
Delight
expto g high in the air with a great burst
of light.
Sunstor will soar, Angel Wings let out
their scr ams as they light up the sky,
yellows, rds, blues and creams.
Arctic P ppies. Blitzkreig and others we'll
shoot from our mortars
They'll rocket high in the night sky ..,.
Burst, light up the town and its waters.
We'll set off the beautiful, colourful Niagara
Falls,
To your "ahs" "ohs", clappings and en-
couragement calls.
The finale will erupt with such fire and
thunder
It will look Pike a volcano is bursting
asunder!
Won't you do YOUR bit? Donate a cheque or
a dollar?
So that folks all around will start to holla,
"Let's get up to Goderich, and have a fun
day,
then stay till the sun sets and watch A
FIREWORK DISPLAY! ! !
Yours with a whoosh! !

Prettiest Town has a rare smell
Dear editor,
There seems to be a great many of our
canine friends who have chosen The Square
as a safety zone for their deposit.
Is it possible that the tourists enjoy this
type of polish on their shoes? There is
definitely one thing to be said about it. It is
unique and different, and for the prettiest
town in Canada, it has a pretty rare smell.
Anything that the popcorn vendor left on
the sidewalk is mild in comparison.
Is it typical of the people of Goderich to
complain over trifles and ignore something
of major significance?
People might
walk away with
a little more
understanding
Dear editor,
Ever since I can remember, I have been
fascinated with cemeteries. This is not
meant to be morbid. No matter what the
season, going out to visit with family
members and acquaintances leaves me with
a feeling of acceptance or rather an inner
peace or humility.
Birds and animals that reside there seem
to be respectful and in complete harmony
with those sleeping and isn't this the way
things should be for all God's creatures. As
it was in the beginning.
There is the mariner's plot with our
wonderful veterans. The enormous size and
staggering cost of some of our earlier im-
migrants' tombstones depicts early years of
death, perhaps due to scarlet fever and
related diseases.
There are two or three stones out at
Maitland Cemetery that are benches for sit-
ting and one departed woman has two small
iron dogs at her feet guarding and watching
over her.
When , people think of Goderich they
automatically identify with the beach, mine,
good roads, museum and old goal. Just
maybe they should take a drive through the
beautiful Maitland Cemetery and catch up
on a bit of history to boot. Besides it doesn't
cost a dime and they might walk away with
a little more love and understanding toward
their fellow marc*

Man joined
another branch
Dear editor,
I read with interest the letter from Steve
Shaw and his complaint about the
Goderich Legion. After 25 years service and
membership, I transferred to another
branch because my wife was accused of
something she didn-'t.do_but was never given
the chance to clear her name. 1 hope Mr.
Shaw does not have to wait as long for an
apology.

says Chief King
Goderich police are warning motorists
who drive around with radios or stereos
"blaring" loud music, to "expect to be
ticketed".
"We don't mind them listening to their
radios — but people 100 feet away don't
have to hear them," said Chief King.
The Chief also warns pet owners that
bylaws against having animals, leashed or
otherwise, on the bathing beach will be
'rigidly -enforced,"
Animals are permitted on the grassed
po, tion of the beach areas but not the sand
beaches, said Chief King.
Happy 98th to E d.n.a
HUrt.O*n'IEW- May 19, a happy occasion
took place in the auditorium at Huronview.
Family and friends gathered on this special
day, to honor and celebrate Edna Cantelon's
98th birthday.
Mrs. Cantelon is a remarkable lady, loved
and respected by all who know her. Until
recentlyiwhen failing_eyesight prevented it,
she was a favorite euchre player, and it was
a pleasure to be in her company.
The May birthday party was held on May
22 with a good attendance. In charge of this
event were the ladies from Hurondale
Women's Institute. A variety program con-
sisting of songs and musical numbers was'
enjoyed.
They should put this deposit in some kind
of a bank where it belongs.
Sincerely,
N.J. Minaker
Township is currently underway, with the
main emphasis on the grey affected areas.
A campaign of this nature is very time con-
suming and time is of the essence both to the
volunteers and the Committee.
If you live within the grey area and do not
see one of the volunteers in the next two
weeks or you live in an area not directly af-
fected by the proposed corridor and would
like to donate to the cause please contact the
Goderich Township Director Evert Ridder
at 482-5033 or myself at 482-9327. We .ap-
preciate your assistance and cooperation.•
Sincerely,
George Thompson
