Board looks for new assistant

The Huron -Perth Roman Catholic
separate school board is looking for an
assistant for the superintendent of business
and finance.
The school bodi}d1approved the position at'
its May 13 meeting.
The person hired for the position will be
under the supervision of superintendent
Jack Lane and will be responsible for all ac-
counting functions, budget control, payroll
and employee benefits which could even-
tually lead to a senior position of respon-
sibility.
The person will be hired effective Sept. 1
at a maximum starting salary of $32,500.
This will mark the second increase to
supervisdi'y stdff this yelEe Earlier, Gaisten
Blanchette was hired as superintendent of
education.
Other supervisory staff include director of
education, William Eckert, superintendent
of education, John McCauley, Mr. Lane and
co-ordinator of plant, Ed Rowland.
Garden Club has lively
bidding with plant quction
A successful auction sale of plants was
sponsored by the Goderich Garden Club in
the auditorium of Robertson Memorial
Public School on Wednesday May 15.
Proceeds of $12&15 will,help to buy plants
for planting at the A.M. and G. Hospital, on
Harbor Hill and in Jubilee Park.
Vice-president Elsa Haydon welcomed
members and visitors to the sale and thank-
ed all who had donated plants to be sold. The
two auctioneers Norma Hazlitt and Dorothy
Feagan encouraged lively bidding for the
large assortment'of plants.
The auctioneers were assisted by runners
Beatrice 'Spading. Joan Stadelmann, and
Irene Todd and by treasurer Doris
Hawthorne.
The Program Committee has arranged an
interesting bus trip for June 19 when the
group will visit Hullett and Maitland Valley
Conservation Areas. During a picnic lunch
break the regular meeting of the Garden
Club will be held.
In the afternoon Mr. and Mrs. Jeff Walker
will be hosts to the members at their unique
home in the Kintail area. A few seats for this
trip are still available. If you are interested,

This structure rehabilitation project .p!
Highway 21 is undertaken 'to prolong the
life of the Maitland River Bridge and
reduce maintenance requirements at this
location.
Work on the project is scheduled to begin
in June, 1985 with completion set for early
fall, 1985.
The contract is awarded to O.J. Gaffney
Limited of Stratford, Ontario at a cost of
$300,535.
Legion
elects

The regular monthly general meeting., of
Goderich Legion Branch 109 was held on
May 7 with President John MacDonald in
the chair and 53 members present.
Nominations and election of the officers
and committee chairmen' of the Branch for
the Legion year June 1, 1985 to May 31, 1986
was conducted by Past Zone Commander
Bob Chapman. John A. MacDonald was re-
elected as president of the branch. Other
branchofficers elected were Alvin
Blackwell as 1st vice president, Stan Profit
as 2nd vice president, Fran Profit as
secretary and Harold Cook as treasurer.
Committee chairmen elected were Finance,
Don Kernick; Property, Harold Chambers;
Sports, Allen Fisher; House, Bill Burke;
Sick and Welfare, Ray Barker; Poppy,
Howard Carroll; Publicity, Neil Shaw;
Youth Education,, Maurice Wilkinson; and
Leadership and Planning, Bob Chapman.
Other appointments will be made by the
Branch executive at their next meeting,
with the installation of Branch officers and
chairmen to be held on Saturday June lst.
The following donations by the Branch
were approved. $60 to the March of Dimes,
$200 to the Canadian Cancer Society, $25 to
the Block Parent Organization, $25 to
Epilepsy Ontario Midwest Region and $200
toward fireworks for the Canada . Day
weekend. The Branch also approved $500 in
support of pee wee baseball. -
Motions were passed to purchase gifts for
the installing team, slings and white gloves
for the Air Cadet squadron ,and white gloves
for the Branch color party and for the Huron
county branch of the RCNA.
The. Legion service officer will visit the
Branch oh June &from 10:30 to 12:00 noon.
Three ordinary members, Alex Duncan,
Raymond Morley, and Mark Allen and three
associate members, Michael McCallum,
Douglas Splan and Lauraine Hurlock were
approved as members of the branch.
The Diamond Jubilee chairman Howard
Carroll reported that the rummage, yard
and auction sale held in support of the
Jubilee committee was very successful and
thanked all those who contributed to this
project. The end of this month is the last
opportunity 'to purchase Jubilee tulip bulbs
from the Branch. The Jubilee committee
will enter a float in the Canada Day parade.
The branch color party will also be in the
parade as in past years. •
Branch President John MacDonald
attended the annual inspection of the
Maitland squadron of the Air Cadets and
presented the branch trophy for dress and
deportment.
Members of the branch are reminded of
the `Liberation of Holland' Appreciation
Night to be held this Friday, May 24 at 7:30
p.m. There will be -a parade from the Legion
hall to the Cenotaph for the laying of a
wreath and then the parade will proceed to
the park at Hamilton and Victoria streets
for the dedication of the new fountain and
plaque. Following this ceremony a social
evening will be held at the Legion courtesy
of our Dutch neighbors.
The next executive meeting of Branch 109
will be held on Tuesday, May 28 and the last
general meeting prior to the summer recess
will be held on Tuesday June 4 at 7:30 p.m
