With 75 per cent of the costs being paid by provincial grants, Goderich will pay a. quarter of the cost of materials, he says. (photo by Susan Hundertmark) Goderich main beach development begins The redevelopment of Goderich's main beach, the next stage of the Goderich Waterfront Master Plan, should be com- pleted by the summer of 1986. Work began to continue the boardwalk from St. Christopher's Beach to the pier after Goderich council passed a motion to pro- ceed on May 13. "If implementing the plan makes as much difference as it did in St. Christopher's Beach, it will be well worth the $155,000," said MayorEileen Palmer. The plan for the main beach continues' the Waterfront Master Plan which was ap- proved by council in 1981. After St. Christopher's Beach was constructed from 1982 to 1983, the road to the beach was pav- ed in 1984,- Knox Martin Kretch Ltd. was commissioned to complete the main beach in 1984. "Everyone just loves St. Christopher's Beach. We've never had anything so positive. It's a real people place; cars are always parked everywhere in the sum- mer," said. Works Commissioner Ken Hunter, who adds the town won an award, from the Ontario Parks Association for St. Christopher's Beach. The landscaping and the playground at the main beach will be along the same line as those at St. Christopher's Beach though slightly different, said Hunter. "It will be the same style with nothing repeated," he said. The boardwalk, which will cost $38,000 should be finished by June 1 before the beach opens for the summer season. In Septembet, work will continue on grading and filling for $4000 and the irriga- tion systems for the lawns will be installed for $27,250. The foundations for the kiosk and the pavilion will be also be built in September with work proceeding during the winter. The playground, which will cost $8,000 will also be done. The grass and trees including Siberian peashrub, Russian olive, burningbush, weeping forsythia, sea buckthorn, sumac and golden weeping willow at a total cost of $8,672 will be planted in the spring of 1986. Of the total cost of $155,340, half' will be funded by the Ontario Neighborhood Im- provement Plan and another quarter will be funded by the Ministry of- Natural Resources Parks Assistance Act. The town will pay for 25 per cent of the materials since the labor is free through make work programs and labor from town employees, said Hunter. p You Are Invited To A u Birthday Party at RIECK IDA Pharmacy 14 The Square, Goderich 10:00 AM TO 1:00 PM Friday, May 24, 1985 To Help Celebrate I.D.A.'s 52nd Birthday FREE Coffee and Birthday Cake Everyone Welcome your Friendly Neighbourhood Drugstore.
