League warns of ATV dangers
The use of'three and four -wheeled all -
terrain vehicles is quickly becoming a way
of life for many Ontarians. But along with
their recent surge in popularity has come -in-
creased concern for their potential to cause
serious harm, or even death, when not used
safely.
Last year, nine people were killed and 212
injured in ATV accidents in Ontario. The
majority of - stuns were male (85 per cent).
Thirty -ix per cent were 15 -years of"age and
wider; another thirty per cent were between
16 and 20 -years of age.
Most of the accidents occurred during
daylight hours, and a surprising,94 per cent
of the drivers were wearing helmets.
Alcohol was not a major factor.
Under the Off -Road- Vehicles Act, all
ATV's must, be registered, have third -party
liability insurance and all occupants must
wear approved helmets. Children under 12
are allowed to operate ATV's under close
adult supervision.
ATV's give a deceptive impression of
stability because of their wide tread and
broad wheels. Considerable practice is re-
quired to master the "all -terrain" use,
although a beginner may successfully han-
dle the machine on gentle terrain. The ap-
peal and challenge of riding over uncertain
terrain, the excitement of risk-taking and
the speed capabilities of the ATV all con-
tribute to the accident potential.
The Ontario Safety League stresses that
parents must take an active role in the train-
ing of all youngsters under the driving age.
The owner's manual will describe many im-
portant operating techniques, the location of
all the controls and their functions, and the
necessary owner inspections and
maintenance. Check with your local dealer
for other "safety literature, and possible
training courses and clubs in your area. Ac-
company your child on all ATV outings.
The League warns parents to be sure that
your child has developed the skills and
maturity needed to operate an ATV safely.
