With Jesus .there is no 'fear
LIEUTENANT WENDY M. JOHNSTONE
THE SALVATION ARMY
In recent weeks _ we have observed a
significant holiday in -our calendar year
Easter. The Easter season is the time dur-
ing which we remember the death of Jesus
Christ on the cross and then celebrate His
victorious resurrection from the dead.
Following the resurrection Jesus ap-
peared to'His disciples many tinges. The ac-
count of one 6f these occasions reads this
way: "While they were still talking about
this, Jesus himself stood among them and
said to them, 'Peace be with; you.' They
were startled and frightened, thinking they
saw a ghost. He said to them, 'Why are you
troubled, and why do doubts rise in your
minds'? Look at my hands and my feet. Itis I
myself. Touch me and see; a ghost does not
have flesh and bones, as you see I have.'
When he had said this, he showed them his
hands and feet." (Luke 24: 3611)
The disciples were afraid of the Jews and
were- hiding at this point. They had good
reason to fear the Jews for it was them who
had, crucified Jesus. Here were Jesus'
followers still in the city- who knows what
might have happened to them. Here we find
them, gathered together, with all of the
doors locked discussing the events of the few
days past.
Imagine the confusion of their hearts and
minds as they -tried to understand what all of
this meant. They had heard that Jesus had
risen. That he was alive and yet, they knew
that He had died; some of them had watched
Him die. How could He now live? Here He
stood in their midst.f-low?
Even when Jesus had shown them the
scars of the wounds He had suffered we see
that they were still not able to understand
fully.
Jesus then takes the time to explain to
them from the Scriptures in order that they
might more fully comprehend the whole
situation and all of its implications.
Without Jesus coming to them and helping
them to 'understand that all that had happen-
ed was in fulfillment of the ancient Scrip-
tures - they would never have known or
understand it all.
How often we are like the disciples in that
room that day. We don't completely
understand some things that happen in our
lives and in fear we hide away from those
things that would confound us.
The disciples were hiding because they
didn't know what to do or who to turn to in
their fear. They were afraid of the uncer-
tainties which lay ahead of them. So are we
many times, aren't we? Afraid of what lies
ahead of us. Afraid of things we du not
understand or cannot explain. Yet, here, in
their fear and uncertainty Jesus comes to
them and, after they believed it was Him,
He opens their minds and hearts to
understand these things. So too, when Jesus
comes to -us through His Holy Spirit we are
made aware of the great truths, once we
have recognized Him as Lord.
Jesus promised to His Disciples that they
uld be clothed with the power of the Holy
S r'irit to complete the tasks to which tl►ey
h "ji been called. This same power is ord-
e x o us if we would but ask Him for it.
e need not live our lives in fear Of the
certainties that sirround us from day to
d but rather, we must look to Jesus as our
so ce of strength and understanding in -all
ar as of our lives. -
esus came to His followers at varied
ples and times during the forty days
fo ,t wing His resurrection. They were
pre , - red by this appearing and disappear-
ing of the Lord to have constant fellowship
wit ; the unseen Master. They learned that
the were in His presence all the time
wh her He was seen or unseen.
s can be our experience as well. Jesus
doe not leave us alone in our fear and
unc dainty - He comes to us and helps us to
and rstand the mysteries of life that might
oth ise confuse' us.
e you experiencing any dark clouds of
disa `pointment or fear of the uncertainties
whi might lie ahead ofyou?
V atever your situation today, the Resur-
rect d Jesus wants to bring the light and
understanding, to your heart and mind.
Let Him speak to you as He spoke to the
disci les in room so many years ago. He
kno w _s what you are feeling; He knows the
answers to your questions. Let Hirn into
your life today and have no fear. ,
