MAY 1, 1985—PAGE 3 Local Girl Guides are preparing for the celebration of the 75th anniversary of guiding this year. Under the direction of Dorothy Hahn, local guides have been learning some authentic Dutch dance steps. Here, Angie Rivett (left) and Jami Sowerby perform the routine in hill costume. (photo by Patrick Raftis) Local guides practice Dutch dance steps for 75th party Practise for the Girl Guide 75th Anniver- sary Rally is now in full swing. On Monday evening Dorothy Haan taught Guides from Goderich and Clinton an authentic Dutch Dance. Other girls have been busy learning the songs that the 180 -voice choir will per- form. Cars filled with eager marchers have been going to Galt to practise for the preci- sion drill and still others are heading to Neustadt to work on a number being done on roller skates! Behind the scenes are many busy leaders and parents driving cars, making phone calls, sewing costumes and, in. general, keeping everything moving along quite smoothly. In their spare time all the girls are selling cheese and cookies to raise the money for the buses to take them to this special event. There is a tremendous amount of organization going into this Rally. For ex- ample: Every Division has been colour - ,coded. That means that our girls, from J3eaver Division, will all have pale green tickets indicating their particular seating area in the arena. They will arrive in buses labelled with the light green picture of "Good Luck Bear" and they'll follow green special markings in pale green.' 'll wearing special markings is pale green. The leaders will, see to it that each girl's ticket has her name and address on it and the ticket will be pinned in her pocket so that one half inch of pale green will show at a glance where she belongs if, by some chance, she takes a wrong turn. There is even a team of "Nice Ladies" ready to scoop up any misplaced children and whisk them back to their proper spot. There are "Runners" whose job will be to take the girls in each act from their seats to the dressing rooms for their costumes, then out to perform and back again to their seats. When the Rally is all over everyone will leave by Divisions upon instructions from an announcer. Once again Beaver Division girls will follow a leader carrying the sign of Good Luck Bear back to their buses. The emphasis of the two hour show' is "Celebrate yesterday - Look to tomorrow". The public is invited to attend and former members will be especially welcome. Tickets, at only $3.50 each, are available from Mrs: Pat Bayes, P.O. Box 832, Port Elgin, Ont., NOH 2C0. Please enclose a self- addressed, stamped envelope. More infor- mation is available from Sylvia Brady at 524-6624 or from any leaders in Goderich. Be sure to bring your camera! Service clubs are liable.... dances since the bartender doesn't get out on the floor and doesn't realize who's drinking what and how much," says Jane Netzke, Goderich recreation director who attended the seminar. . Because the Goderich arena is booked almost every weekend of the year with a special event permit, Netzke says it's im- portant people understand both their group and the town can be sued if a drunk driver leaving their event has an accident. "Volunteers are trying to do the best job they can but they forget, that because they're having one dance a year, they don't know all the laws that come into' play." She says an information sheet about liability and recognizing the signs of intox- ication may be added, to the contract groups must sign when renting the arena facilities. "It used to be no one thought of suing. Now, it's a different story. We'll try to do as many preventative things as possible because they clear you a lot quicker during a trial or inquest if one happened," she says. Goderich Police Chief Pat King says groups often don't realize they have the same power bars do to cut people off when they've had too much to drink. "Most do their best to screen people go- ing in but they don't realize they can refuse to serve them. Then, they think they should call the notice autnmatiraTiv when someone gets out of hand. In many cases, it could be proved they did nothing for half an hour before calling the police," he says. "They should try to prevent the problem under the terms of their permit instead of waiting until the situation gets out of hand." His suggestions to prevent trouble in- clude clearing away beer bottles im- mediately, wearing club shirts so servers are readily identifiable and learning how to deal with intoxicated people without a confrontation. Schoemaker agrees that servers should be -trained to recognize and deal with intox- ication. "If you just cut someone off, he's going to be ugly. Right now, we're kind of green at it but things will get better;" he says. Another way to cut down on the risk of being sued is to discover alternate ways to make money for a group than selling beer. "The organizers may be heavy drinkers themselves and think a night of drinking is the norm," says Dave Hart of the Addic- tion Research centre in Andon, .._ "Maybe the majority of people would prefer to attend a fancy dinner or some other event." Peters says the attitude surrounding special events has to change to prevent the problem of drunk drivers. "Does getting drunk necessarily mean we'll have a good time?" he.asks.._.... Smitty Sez...
