BY PATRICK RAE="One Night Stand," Theatre Circle's cur-
rent stage production, while a Welt rough
around the edges, is none -the -less engross-
ing( and provides an enjoyable evening's
entertainment. The play, which played last
Thurdsday, Friday and Saturday night, on
the stage at Blyth, is the group's latest ef-
fort to keep live theatre alive during the
cultually-bleak winter months.'
Set.. in Toronto the play centres on the
misadventures of a city -girl, who picks up a
stranger in an unfamiliar bar and brings
him home on a whim. She chooses this
course, after being left alone on her birth-
day by both her married boyfriend and her
female roomate.
Linda Bolen plays Daisy, the restless
young lady, while Jeff Christianson por-
trays Rafe, her choice for a "One Night
Stand".
Both are experienced actors. Winnipeg
native Bolen rose from community theatre
work to some parts m professional theatres
and television. Christian comes from an ar-
my family, was born in Europe and has had
shots on such quality tevlevision shows as
SCTV and Seeing Things. -
Christensen plays his role of the
psycopathic drifter to perfection. Bolen is
also good in a tough role, which demands
r to play a scene for laughs one second
and swith to intense drama the next.
The constant transitions from 'side -
slapper to nail -biter are one of the play's
few shortcomings. The audience just begins
to get involved in the suspense as they slow-
ly learn of Cristensen's true warped nature,
when they are practically hit in the face
with a pie.
The play itself is at fault, not the cast, nor
novice director Keith Roulston, who has
done a splendid job with the staging of the
play. Under Roulston's control this produc-
tion could udoubtedly find some direction
and improve the flow problem.
One Night Stand played in Blyth last week
with this type of production,' but it is..well-
designed at sets the atmosphere adequate-
ly;
The audience at the Thursday night per-
formance was extremely receptive„ to the
play, following the mood changes with
delight and thouroughly enjoying the com-
edic moments.
Theatre Circle has hit on an extremely.
workable concept, in providing winter
theatre to this area, and is providing quality
theatre, for those that can't get enough of
the stage during the summer. months. The
group definately rates a look-see from any
The set is not elaborate, as is expected serious theatre buff.
THEATRE REVIEW
On the, up side, the play's funny moments
are truely hilarious and Christensen shows
what a talented actor can do with a really
meaty role. Bolens telephone conversations
with unseen callers at times rival Bob
Newhart's phone routines, when the dry
comic is in top force.
Don Harran is MC of official opening at Stratford
It will be a day of dedication and celebra-
tion as the Stratford Festival officially
opens the new additions to its Festival and
Avon Theatres on Saturday, Mar. 23.
The $, million Capital Additions Program
(made possible by matching grants of $2
million from the federal and provincial
governments) began just over a year ago
and was completed on time and within
budget. It includes pew rehearsal, workshop
and studio space in both theatres that enable
the Festival to consolidate all its activities
within its own buildings. Of the Festival's $2
million share of the construction budget_
more than $1.4 million already has been
raised.
Weather perrnitting, the official opening
ceremonies for the new additions will com-
mence at 11 a.m. on the new terrace of the
Festival Theatre with acclaimed actor,'
writer and television personality Don Har-
ron acting as Master of Ceremonies.
Distinguished guests in attendance will in-
clude Geoff Scott, Department of Com-
munications, representing the Government
of Canada, a representative of the Govern-
ment of Ontario and His Worship Mayor Ted
Blowes representing the City of Stratford.
Peter Herrnuort, President of the Festival's
Board of Governors, will serve as official
Festival spokesman.
As part of theopening festivities, the
Festival also will host its annual Open
House, cancelled last year because of the
construction underway. In 1983, more than
2,000 people visited the Festival's Open
House and were taken on guided tours of
Festival festivities. a.
This year; continuous tours of both the
Festival and Avon Theatres will begin at
noon and run until 5 p.m. There is no admis-
sion charge to Open House activities.
Subsidy reduced forroad program
Huron County will have to come up with
an additional $95,000 to spend on roads in
1980, an increase of eight per cent over last
year. In the budget presented to county
council last Thursday, it was noted that pro-
posed expenditures actually are up only 6.7
per cent, a total increase of $219,000.
However the Ministry of Transportation and
Communications has reduced its subsidy by
$33,000 this year, meaning more of the
money must be raised through the county
levy. 4—
The reverend Peter. Hamel, National Af-
fairs secretary of the General; Church of
Canada, recently described three exciting
experimental projects. The Church is look-
ing for sites for use as pilot projects in the
development of Solar and wind energy
systems for parish -buildings. Thesites were
named and the responses were evaluated by
a London, Ontario based consulting firm
and three were decided upon, London,
"Palmerston, and Mississauga.
