High Woad :pressure costs you and the
government over $'15 billion dollars a year

adults.
Unlike a toothache or a backache, high
blood pressure doesn't produce any symp-
trins. People may not veil know that thy
have it until it begins to cause trouble with
the heart, brain or kidneys.
"They don't know what causes high blood
pressure in 90 per cent of the cases. But in a
few instances the cause can be determin-
ed," said Joan Van pen Broeck, Chairman
of the Huron County Chapter of the Heart
and Stroke Foundation of Ontario.
There are many myths about high blood
pressure. Some people think that just
because a person is nervous or tense that he
or she will have high blood pressure. People
also think that just because a person is
overweight that he or she will suffer from
high blood pressure. However, this is not the
case according to Heart Lines, a pamphlet
dedicated to informing the public about
heart disease. The pamphlet says that
overweight people are rnore likely to suffer
from high blood pressure than thin people. It
also says that just because a person loses
weight, does not mean that his or her blood
pressure will drop.

On Friday, March 22 there will be a stress
clinic at the Maitland,Golf and Country Club
co-sponsored by the Huron County Health
Unit and the Huron County Chapter of the
Heart Foundation. Dr. Richard Earle, presi-
dent of the Canadian Stress Institute, will be
the speaker.
Regulation is needed against
pornography even in democracy
BY JACK RIDDEI 1
The time ... now.
The locale ... living rooms, recreation
rooms, hotel and motel rooms, etc. across
the North American Continent.
The scenario ... alone, or in groups, people
are watching scenes in excruciating detail
of human beings being brutalized, by op-
pressors.
I'm not talking about newscasts of savage
warfare in some far off barbaric land, but
about commercial videotapes produced and
distributed in the name of "entertainment."
We live in a civilized society. Yet, there
are those among us who find it "entertain-
ing" to. • gloat over films which feature
:graphic violence, gang-- rape,. bondage,
domination, bestiality, the mutilation and
degradation of women and children.
Of course, films and videotapes are not
the only "products" -which,: disseminate the -
"new" and violent pornography. They are,
however, the most difficult to control, and
the most effective invaders of . the homes
and minds of the people.
They were also, for me, the means of br-
inging - about raft .new. and. —appalling
understanding , of .why women's groups, in-
cluding the Ontario Liberal Women's
Perspective Advisory Committee, were
demanding that action be taken to restrict
the proliferation of what is virtually hate
propaganda aimed at women and children. .
• Censorship is, of course, anathema ..to
those of us who are determined to preserve
and protect, our democratic society, and we
are ever conscious of its inherent `dangers.
Freedom of speech and political expression
are, and must, remain sacrosanct. Equally,
freedom of artistic expression is vitally im-
portant, and must be maintau►eu. wnythen,
you may ask, would a Liberal like myself
advocate any form of censorship or limita-
tion upon publications or other materials.
The answer is that at this point in time
there is apparently no other method
QUEEN'S
PARK
available to us of controlling the, spread of
violent pornography - and its inherent
dangers - in North America.
Those who are calling for action to be
taken against pornography are not prudish
"buttoned -up" individuals, anxious to ban
erotica and loving depictions of sexuality -
even explicit sexuality.
We are concerned with the depiction of
acts of cruelty and violence which are total-
ly offensive to all thinking -men add women.
Brutality and subjugation are abhorrent tri
reality . "and they are abhorrent in simula-
tion, by implication --• the implication that
they are permissible and, Heaven help us,
entertaining!
If the victims in these stories were Black,
Chinese, Jewish or, others visible minorities,
th i ' vrioulCl" "i lgoin'g p>aiilic outcli`y, and
organized protestations would be made by
. the protectors of civil liberties. Why then
.are there not ongoing and widespread pro-
testations about the abuse of the civil liber-
ties of women and children which are abus-
ed symbolically in violent pornography?
Responsible and caring journalists and
writers, artists, film-makers; etc. have
always been their own censors, as they con-
tinue- to- • be,. guided - by- their own.. value
judgements, and -careful about -the values of -
.the general public. They don't abuse women
and children in the name of infortion or
art, because they are not "into" abuse.
The purveyors of hatred, cruelty and
bestiality, masquerading under the guise of
entertainment are not concerned with ar-
tistic integrity or human interest. They are
concerned with one thing only - profit, for

the pornography industry now runs into
billions and billions of dollars."If in the pro-
cess of acquiring their ill-gotten gains, they
succeed in undermining the fabric of our
society, . in desensitizing people, making
violence and cruelty less repugnant, then
this they regard as a bonus, a softening up of
the market for their wares.
Today's hard-core pornography has `ab-
solutely nothing to do with breaking down
the old shibboleths of sexual repression, and
everything to do with the sexual oppression
of women and children. It is anti -woman,
anti -child and anti -male, also, because no
right-thinking man is in favour of the kind of
treatment of haulm beings which is
depicted in the publications; films, videos,
etc., which are all too easily obtainable.
The struggle between my philosophy as a
liberal, totally opposed to any form of cen-
sorship,. with .all its dangers, and my deep
concerti — as a husband, father and elected
representative — about the new forms of por-
nography, with all its dangers, .Was painful
and difficult to resolve.
Ultimately, I was guided by the
knowledge — indeed the fear' —'that, 'iilkH';
checked, the pornography of today has the
potential to have frightening repercussions
for all our womenfolk ... for all our children.
There have been many studies oi► the ef-
fects of violent pornography on groups of
"normal" men. While some have been
challenged, there is overwhelming evidence
that the so-called new pornography has the
potential to break down patterns of civilized
behaviour, of drastically .affecting,:- in. a .
negative . and severely -damaging :WAY,
;male/female relationships.
To quote one expert, -John Briere of the
University of Manitoba, "When :we asked
one group which aspect they found most sex-
ually exciting they said it was when the
woman begged for mercy and when the sex
caused the women pain."
Whatever happened to "making love"?
If someone can come up with a system
other than a form of censorship which will
effectively restrict today's pornography, I'll
be among the first in line to support that
system.
In the meantime, our only recourse is to a
form of censorship and regulation, as the on-
ly measures available to us.
At the same time, we must be ever
vigilant about the need to protect freedom of
information, and freedom of political and
real artistic expression. These basic and in-
tegral democratic values I have always
defended, and will continue to defend at all
costs.
