brought to my attention that
t(Ws have naisdnterpreted a state -
your. hrticle on the board's debate
French Immersion - incorrectply,
Ingrthat I supported, the Motion t0.i1.-
u to Immersion in Grades 7 and 8.
There ..were, in fact, two motions
presented, the first being an amendment to
the motion adding the phrase "at no cost to
the`boaltr..1 apoke against this motion as I
believe that, if we are going to implement
curriculum, it is our responsibility to
assume the, costs. We already have too
Many `.'fuser -pay" programs in our schools.
1111 a small measure, these fees erode the
principle of equal -educational opportunities
within the county,
I did not support the motion "That, the
Board'develop the criteria for establishing a
program of late immersion in the Grade 7
and 8 classes in the Clinton, Seaforth, Ex-
eter, Goderich and..Wingham areas" as, to
my mind, it implied approval in principle to
criteria yet to be established. I was also
quite concerned in that the committee did
not address the issue of. French language in-
struction in the secondary schools and its
impact . on their course offerings. What
would be the point of a two-year program?
On the contrary, it would be a great disser-
vice to the students.
Trusting that this clarifies my position.
Yours truly,

LETTER
Dear editor;
A truly educated man should speak more
than one language. How refreshing it was to
read recent letters from Bill Metcalfe and
Gregory Pilton in a recent Clinton paper,
upholding bilingualism.
After reading so many bigoted ignorant
letters on the subject it is a miter to mow au
Canadians are not so stupid. '
Had our forefathers been more
. foresighted we would all be speaking
French and English as our two founding
cultures should, thus enriching our great in-
heritance. These are the two international
languages of the world.
At the inauguration of Lord Tweedsmuir
(John' Buchan.) -as Governor General' Or -
Canada in 1935, Archdeacon Scott wrote
"Lord Tweedsmuir spoke in English and
French thus recognizing the dual nature of
our great land".
A generation of .students fluent in both
English and French would be a huge boost to
.the future of our country. It would be a blow
to separatism which I am sure nobody in his
or .her. senses wants. It would be a blow to
'the silly pettifogging jealousies which now
exist. We say we want peace in the world,
yet are too small minded to see we are
obstructing it right in our oWTI back yard.
With 'all his faults Trudeau had "a vision
which would have made- us unique before
the world. He did.not.suffer fools. gladly like_. -_
..those he .must deal with whoobJected. to
French on our cereal boxes. Pity our souls
are so small minded!
It had nothing to do with politics what-
soever if we hadn't made it so. Education
only was the reason.
From the standpoint of education let us
regard the fact that a truly educated inan.
should speak more than one language.
One is humiliated and ashamed if on
travelling to other countries one is con-
fronted by folk speaking six or seven
languages and who gaze with surprise and
amazement that someone from Canada
speaks only one, and that one English where
.opportunity for at least French should be
natural.
The stupidity of accusing Trudeau of turn-
ing Canada into a French nation should be
ignored since we must all know it could only
be "a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and
fury signifying nothing".

In Sweden it is compulsory for a child
entering school to study English in Grade
one. In Grade two he has a choice between
French and German. In Grade three he
takes the one he didn't take in Grade two. By
the time he reaches Secondary School this
student speaks two languages fluently, a
third fairly well and a working knowledge of
a fourth. In other words fluency and a work-
ing knowledge of four languages.
French used to be compulsory, why of all
things, should it not be so now? Knbwing you
are from Canada you will be asked many
times by someone (who eprobably. speaks
,rfour.or five languages) "Parlez-vous Fran-
cais, Madame?" and you answer to his
astonishment and your embarrassment
"Non, Je ne parle pas Francais".
We should all fight the ugly backload of
racism, for that sadly enough is what anti -
bilingualism is all about - the ugly words
hate racism "and, bigotry:._.: .. __. _,...... _ ......
My two grandsons now aged seventeen
and eighteen speak French and English
fluently having been sent to. French
kindergarten - a heritage we owe to every
Canadian child.
The member of Clinton Town Council who
said he would vote for bilingualism if on go-
ing to Quebec:he would be answered in
English can rest assured he would be many
times. But he cannot speak French.
Sincerely,
Elizabeth Fingland,
Clinton.
