The project employs three people for a twenty week period to col- lect tree seed and to tend plantations of young trees. This project provides an example of tri - level government co-operation. Environ- ment Canada contributed $17,500 tofund the project. Huron County is the Project spon- sor , providing administrative support. In Huron and Perth County, 2;330 elemen- tary students in the 21 -participating schools read 18,861 books and raised $18,260.92 into the research of the cause and cure of multi- ple sclerosis. Upper Thames in Mitchell, Blyth Elementary and St. Columban each won a Readers Digest Atlas of Canada for having the highest completion rate in their school board. Participating children collected pledges from friends and family for each book they read. Both the number of schools par- ticipating and the amount of funds raised are up significantly from last year. Popular music star, Michael Jackson official spon- sor of the Multiple Sclerosis Read-a-thon, says "It's human nature to want to help those less fortunate than ourselves". Donald S. Willard, Executive Director of the Multiple Sclerosis Society, Ontario Divi - slop, is delighted with the enthusiasm that has been shown by these students. He is quoted as saying "Multiple Sclerosis is the most common central nervous system disease of Canadian young adults. Affecting over 50,000 Canadians, it permanently' damages the central nervous system and has no known cause or cure. Since it strikes during the career and family building years, it affects families, -employers and employees alike. It costs the Canadian economy hundreds of millions of dollars .in lost jobs, medical bills, unemployment in- surance and social service payments -The funds raised from Read-a-thon play an ab- solutely crucial role in helping us fight this disease head on". • • _ I for Tett rea released by ministry ht Planning for wetlands and wildlife is a challenge, but it -is -working well in the Hullett Provincial Wikllife Area. Located just 6.5 km northeast of Clinton, in Hullett Township, Huron County, this area provides over 750 ha of wetland habitat. The entire property. is 2200 ha in size and includes a variety of terrain and land uses. Created between 1979 and 1983, the Hullett Provin- cial Wildlife Area is a joint co-operative ef- fort between Ducks Unlimited (Canada) and the Ministry of Natural Resources. Planning for Hullett has been ongoing for some time, beginning with the completion of the first Master Plan in 1979. "Hullett serves as an important area for migrating water- fowl," said Bill Creighton, Resource Plann- ing Supervisor.. "Release today of the Daft Resource Management Plan bnngsles one step closer to completing the necessary' planning for this area." The plan incot- perates new information and reflects, cur- ' rent polieies in resource management. "A great 'deal' of hard work and effort have gone into producing this document," said District Manager Jim Hamill. I have visited most of my favorite spots (shopping centres) and was only lost once.
