Fall 1984 MS READ-a-thon 'came to a close.
In Huron and Perth County, 2;330 elemen-
tary students in the 21 -participating schools
read 18,861 books and raised $18,260.92 into
the research of the cause and cure of multi-
ple sclerosis. Upper Thames in Mitchell,
Blyth Elementary and St. Columban each
won a Readers Digest Atlas of Canada for
having the highest completion rate in their
school board.
Participating children collected pledges
from friends and family for each book they
read. Both the number of schools par-
ticipating and the amount of funds raised
are up significantly from last year. Popular
music star, Michael Jackson official spon-
sor of the Multiple Sclerosis Read-a-thon,
says "It's human nature to want to help
those less fortunate than ourselves".
Donald S. Willard, Executive Director of
the Multiple Sclerosis Society, Ontario Divi -
slop, is delighted with the enthusiasm that
has been shown by these students. He is
quoted as saying "Multiple Sclerosis is the
most common central nervous system
disease of Canadian young adults. Affecting
over 50,000 Canadians, it permanently'
damages the central nervous system and
has no known cause or cure. Since it strikes
during the career and family building years,
it affects families, -employers and
employees alike. It costs the Canadian
economy hundreds of millions of dollars .in
lost jobs, medical bills, unemployment in-
surance and social service payments -The
funds raised from Read-a-thon play an ab-
solutely crucial role in helping us fight this
disease head on". •

Planning for wetlands and wildlife is a
challenge, but it -is -working well in the
Hullett Provincial Wikllife Area. Located
just 6.5 km northeast of Clinton, in Hullett
Township, Huron County, this area provides
over 750 ha of wetland habitat. The entire
property. is 2200 ha in size and includes a
variety of terrain and land uses. Created
between 1979 and 1983, the Hullett Provin-
cial Wildlife Area is a joint co-operative ef-
fort between Ducks Unlimited (Canada)
and the Ministry of Natural Resources.
Planning for Hullett has been ongoing for
some time, beginning with the completion of
the first Master Plan in 1979. "Hullett serves
as an important area for migrating water-
fowl," said Bill Creighton, Resource Plann-
ing Supervisor.. "Release today of the Daft
Resource Management Plan bnngsles one
step closer to completing the necessary'
planning for this area." The plan incot-
perates new information and reflects, cur-

"A great 'deal' of hard work and effort
have gone into producing this document,"
said District Manager Jim Hamill. "Review
and comment. by the public, interest groups -

• The plan will be avitilable .for review at
the Wingham District Office .of the Ministry
of Natural Resources, between 8:00 a.m.

from January 14, 1985 to February 8, 1985.
