GIGANTIC JANUARY CLIEARANCESALE;
In case you were unable to tell from the photo, Friday was Hat
Day at Victoria Public School and children of all , grades
displayed a weird and wonderful assortment of head gear. The
kindergarten students in Mrs. Wark's class were decked out in a
fine assortment of hats and sang an original composition for the
student assembly. Another class entertained with its rendition
of the Mexican Hat Dance. (photo by Dave Sykes)
Riddell calls for review of stalemate
An open letter to Robert Elgie, Minister of
Consumer and Commercial Relations.
I am writing to you regarding a matter of
urgent importance requiring your im-
mediate attention. It concerns the recent
decision by the Ontario Racing Commission
of December 20th to allow afternoon and
night post times for thoroughbred racing on
the Ontario Jockey Club circuit in 1985.
In view of the stalemate in negotiations on
any possible solutions to the Ontario harness
racing strike, I request your immediate
review of this situation.
need not tell you of the serious hardships
for a great number of persons and organiza-
tions which is created as a result of the stop-
page of standardbrect horse racing in the
proviunce. The standardbred industry has
developed racing operations in every area
of the province creating significant invest-
ment and employment.
Your lack of involvement in helping to
tesolve tlAs, situation is, totally unaccep:
IVioreUirer, my .attempts to contact
you or the Chairman of the Ontario Racing
Commission on a number of occasions to
help resolve this situation have been futile
as my telephone calls have not been return-
ed.
I hope that your actions on this matter are
not an indication of the lack of importance
with which you view this situation. If that is
the case, I would urge that you ask the
Premier to transfer the jurisdiction of the
Ontario Racing Commission to the Minister
of Agriculture and Food to where it rightly
belongs.
As you are abundantly aware, racing
After dark in this province has traditionally
remained. the sole preserve of the standard-

Vince.
The decision of the Ontario Racing Com-
mission is a complete reversal of traditional
and declared preference by the
thoroughbreds for early afternoon racing
Until very recently. Moreover, that decision
. remains even more baffling m view
fact that the Ontario Racing Commission
Name and identity is
an important issue
Dear editor,
"Minisier's Study" in your issue of
January 9 dealt with the importance of
"name and identity". The writer said:
"Everyone needs an identity expressed in
the name or names.. by which he or she is
called."
Evidently there is little unity of belief
among religious leaders. The Preface of the
Revised Standard Version Bible says: "The
use of any proper name for the one and only
God, as though there were other gods from
whom He had to be distinguished ... is en-
tirely inappropriate for the universal faith
of the Christian Church."
However, in the Anglican Theological
-Revie* of October 1959 Doctor Walter
Lowrie highlighted the need to know God's
name. He said: "In hyan relationships it
is highly important to know the proper
name, the personal name of oneiwe love, to
whom we are speaking, or even about whom
we speak. Precisely so it is in man's relation
to God. A man who does not know God by
name does not really know Him as a person,
has no speaking acquaintance with
( which is meant by prayer), and he can iiot
tial force." or as a part ora mysterious
'trinity').
The King James ( Authorized version) Bi-
bje_renders_ God's 41er_sonal.._name_
LORD" has been substituted (sometimes
not all capitalized). For ihstance, .at
Romans 10:13 we read: "For whosoever
shall call upon the name of the Lordshall be
saved." And the marginal reference refers
the reader. to Joel 2:32, which reads: "...
whosoever shall call on the name of the
LORD (all capitals) „shall be delivered."
The Hebrew -English New Testament
published by the TrinitarianBible Society,
has at Romans 10:13 the Hebrew
Tetragrammaton "HVHJ" which
transliterated mak q "JeHoVaH". That is
why Paul, at Rol5_10:14 asks: "How
shall they call on him in whom they have not
believed? and how shall they believe in him
of whom they have not heard? and how shall
they hear without a preacher!'
Now, I ask: If the use of any proper name
for God "is entirely inappropriate for the
faith of the Christian Church" how -can those
who depend upon the "Church" for in-
struction in worship "call upon the name of
JEHOVAH," if, as the World Council of •
Churches confesses: "the Lord Jesus Christ
as God and Savior according to the Scrip-
tures and therefore seek to fulfill their com-
.fileisim.owa.onlgasanimpa r-
JEHOVAH only a few times; otherwise in
the over 7000 tirnes that name appears in the
Hebrew and Greek Scriptures the title,"the
mon _calling_to_the glory oLthe,one-Godr-
Father, Son and Holy Spirit." (1 Corinthians
8:6 R.S.V.).
To my mind, this is an important question,,

in a letter of December 13th to the industry
not to allow 4:00 p.m. thoroughbred racing

As the Minister under whose jurisdiction
