" i didn't get a',pair of downhill skis for thii Stlnas. This is not surprising, as I con- selausly neglected to mention skis when • preparing my annital, letter to Santa Claus. ' Aetua'liy I was afraid to ask for a pair, Rause I felt there was a very good Chance,I 'night get. them - myhaving been ' such a good boy all year and all. Still,. as I look out upon the Sea of white shovel*filler, with which we have been ;.(blessed? cursed? Pick one.) this holiday season, I can't help feeling a tinge of ,regret that I never screwed up the courage to return to the slopes after my first disasterous endeavor. I had only agreed to give skiing a try, after a great deal of cajoling from two associates (I hesitate to call thea). friends) who insisted that any resident of the Great White North, who couldn't ski, would bring shame and dishonor to his fellow coun- trymen. Looking back, I often wish I had opted for shame and dishonor. My second thoughts began in earnest as our car approached Kitchener's Chicopee Ski Club. Even from a distance, I couldsee this brightly -lit behemoth was Ono mere tobaggan tiin, Despite my protests, we arrived at the club and went throught the ritual rental of skis, boots and accessories. After manag- ing to don this.ackward garb, I felt I had done enough -for my first session. But no - my .. companions insisted we most now tackle the hill. • But, there was an obstacle to be over- come, even before making that first downhill plunge, I had to pass the test .of - To mount the chair -style lift, I was com-. pelled °to dash between the constantly-. moving chairs and wait for the contrap- tion to scoop me up and whisk me to the top. Not easy, considering my every move .to this point, had resulted in some kind of pratfall. I managed to get into position all right, but when the thing. hit me from .behind - (very unsportingly, I thought) I. was knocked.completly off-balance. I ended rip clinging 'desparatelyto the side bar, with only about half -a -cheek resting on the seat, ` while 'the devilish conveyance ,continued to relentlessly separate my breakable • body from the ground. Once settled relatively ;safely- into the chair, I was dismayed to discover I had -lost- one of ny-ski -poles., Since.I- was. court, .ting. on .these thin. aluminum instrunnents to help me maintain some semblance of balance on the way down;. I could not fotsee making the trip with only one.. Would they have to send the Ski Patrol up ` to rescue me? Would they even bother? I got off the lift planning to search out a St. Bernard with a cask of rum and a place to • spend the 'light. Fortunately a thoughtfulskier riding on the chair behind me had deftly plucked my errant polefrom • ViiW 8Y PATRICK RAFTIS the frozen ground below and returned into me. So, with only the briefest instruction in the basics of stopping, I plunged toward the bottom, which appeared to, be miles away. As it turned out, I travelled only a Matter of yards„ before discovering why all those other skiers were executing graceful turn after graceful turn. It slows you down. With my straight -down style, I found my own speed building up to about Mach One when my skis crossed, sending me into a • tumble that must have looked like a scene . from "Jerry Lewis Goes Skiing"... • When I stopped rolling, my skis were no longer attached to, my boots (good rid- dance!) and my poles had been torn again from my grasp. I was delighted to discover though, that all of my bones, seemed com- pletely unsevered. I, thought my luck had turned when I finally made my wag to the bottom. I had managed to lose my lift ticket during my erratic descent. What better reason to quit. But, the lift operator (observant soul that he was) took one look - at my snow - 'covered form and deduced I had already .,.-been"'doyen "tile hil-and-so;-was-only--fair.-=.7,: happy to afford me a second chance at self- mutilation. After several more comedic runs, I was just beginning to make some progress when my companions suggested we; test our mettle on a different rOn. It was at this other hill, that I learned to appreciate the chair lift. The only means N .of reaching the top of this snow pyre, was a , - rope tow. I was obliged to twist my arms behind my back and attempt to 'stand up . while I was hauled kicking and screaming up the hill. Actually I only made it part way, up the hill, because I fell off the miserable thing, fell pretzel -like to the ground and broke my ,pole. At last, I had a good enough excuse to dispense.. -with -If uther_ skiing_.andsornpelt ed my companions (who's laughter had by now grown very irritating) to nee ompany• - me to the establishment's beverage room. In that comfortable room, which afford- ed a clear view of the hateful hill covered With stubborn skiers, I found time for reflection. Perhaps on my next visit, I will make that room my first stop and take a few moments to consider the pros and cons of checkers as an .alternate wintertime sport. q77 Mme; e,- a; °h • AGS ..N RED'CROSS: YOUTH WATER SAFETY: $21.00 *YELLOW* Monday - ` 5:00-3:30 p.m. 6:00-6:30 p.m. Saturday 2:303:00 p.m. *ORANGE* Monday 3:30-6:00 p.m. Saturday 2:00.2:30 p.m. *RED* Tuesday ° 6:00-6:30 p°m° d Saturday 1:30-2;00 *MAROON* Tuesday 5:30-6:00 p.m. Saturday 2:30-3:00 p.m. *SURVIVAL* Tuesday ° 3:00-3:30 p.m. Saturday 2:30-3:00 p.m. *BLUE* Tuesday 6:30=7:00 p.m. Saturday 2100-2:30 p.m. *GREEN* Wednesday 5:00-5:30 p.m. Saturday 1:30-2:00 p.m. *,GREY* Thursday •" 6:00-6;45 p.m. *WHITE* Thursday 6:454:30 pail.
