By the Reverend
Robert O. Ball,
North Street United Church
Once upon a time, when God was creating
the earth, four angels stood by watching.
Naturally, each one had a different reaction
to the event. The first one asked the
MINSTER'STUDY
question, "Why did God make it?" Thus, the
beginning of philosophical thought. The
second asked, "How dirt God snake it?"
Thus the beginning of all scientific research.
The third angel was astounded at the beauty
and potential of such a creation and desired
to posseas it, saying, "Give it to me A truly
BMA response.
It was the fourth angel's response that one
might call the religious one. That reaction
was, "let me take care of it".
Perhaps one might say that it is because
of that kind of response that human beings
can accept the status as being created in the
image of God. For, more than being just a
passive part of the created order, we find
that we must take SSI n active role, as the
earth's caretakers. How we handle the task
is the problem.
Having just again passed Remembrance
Day, we might consider what response we
Just as the people of lower regnenbered
with great pwaslon the elaveries, exiles, and
other such experiences In their Wad, they
did so with .a sense of great joy and
celebration, " that this memory was not a
mere glance into the past, but a renewed
dedication to the future.
In the same way, the
Cluistian com-
munity gathered to worship, and to
celebrate, following the words of Jesus,
This do in remembrance of Me". What was
significant was not the 'remembering' as a
passive experience, but the 'doing'. It was a .
renewed commitment to enter into the life of
Christ, and be agents of His nnissiolt to the
world. -
The only meaningful. 'remembrance' we ,
can enter into, then, must be an active,
dedication to the will of God for peace and.
righteousness for the world that God ere4ted
and entrusted to our care.
It's an enormous task. But, surely we
wouldn't want it any other way.
