Volunteers come to the
rescue at Huron Museum
This gist spring. for the vory firer ti.,,
group of about 30 volunteers from_ across the
county became involved with the Huron
County Pioneer Museum in Goderich.
The volunteers came to the rescue when,
due to budget cuts and uncertainty about the
museum's future, the usual four guides and
one custodian could not be hired.
Assisting the four full-time paid staffers at
the museum, the volunteers gave guided
tours to school groups; repaired some of the
museum's artifacts; did research work;
served refreshments on the lawn to certain
tour groups; and held a couple of craft
seminars for area children.
Presently, they are working on a float to
enter in Goderich's Santa Claus parade and
they are planning a pioneer weekend to be
held at the museum next August. They also
hope to have a Bi -Centennial project in the
works soon for next year.
"The whole purpose of the volunteer
group is to promote the museum and get
more community involvement," says
Bonnie Dunn, the group's chairman.

Mrs. Dunn explains that the group -as yet
unnamed -is very informal and loosely
organized at present, with meetings being
held about once every two months. She says
a lot more volunteers are needed and would
urge anyone interested in joining the group
to call her at 524-8903 or museum curator
Raymond Scotchmer at 524-9610.
Mr. Scotchmer says even though just the
bottom floor of the museum was open this
past season (May 1 to October 31), the
regular paid staff would have had a great
deal of difficulty handling the workload
without the assistance of the volunteers and
he looks forward to the continuation of the
group. To that end, a meeting was held in
Goderich last week to evaluate the work of
this past season and to plan for next year.
