There were a few boys' pranks on
Hallow but so far as heard there were no
real bad one The steps from St Andrew's
ward school were taken to the bank beyond
the Summer Hotel; tildes like this and the
woval of a few gates seems to be the total
of the night's skylarks.
Winter appeared in Goderich Tuesday
eight and Wednesday, there being a gale
blowing, the thermometer dropping below
the freezhig point and light snowfalls being
prevalent.
The electric railroad is being pushed
ahead, about 50 teams and 112 men being
employed on the work.
The brick work of Colonel Young's two
storey residence
on Nelson Street
is finished
and the house will be ready for occupation
before Christmas.
Mr. John Beattie met with an accident on
the Bayfield Road on Monday. His team of
horses shied at a passing automobile and he
was thrown to the ground, a dislocated
shoulder being the result.
The local fishing fleet—five tugs—brought
in four and one-half tons of perch and trout
in a single day this week. This was as much
as the average two weeks' haul for the fleet.
The boats were operated by the MacKay
brothers, Peter MacDonald, "Mac"
MacDonald, the Graham brothers and
"Reddy" MacDonald.
J.P. Hume, principal of GCI, has an-
nounced that Alex G. MacVicar has won the
MacKay memorial scholarship valued at
$200 and a Carter scholarship of $60. Mary I.
Hueston of Goderich has won another Carter
scholarship valued at $40.
Two men made off with a bag full of
chickens this week after clubbing the hired
man
over the
head
the
farm of Jack
McMillen, concession six, Goderich
Township.
With the granting of permits for nine new
boines in October, total value of local
building projects approved so far this year -
rose to $1,295,935.
If the Goderich Police Commission adds a
sixth man to the town police force, it should
choose an experienced officer who can act
as second -in -command, it was suggested at
a commission meeting yesterday. Between
now and November 10, when another
meeting will be held, commissioners will
mull over the possibility of appointing
someone who might be given the rank of
sergeant.
With the rabid fox scare growing closer to
Huron County, it is likely that County
Council, in session here next week, will deal
with the situation. A decision is likely to be
influenced by the advice of the Huron "
County Health Unit.
With the formal swearing in on Monday
morning of Goderich's new police chief,
Fred Minshall of Guelph, the town's new
police force went into action in its entirety.
This means a total of five men on the force.
The final installment for the new roof on
the Goderich and District Memorial Arena
was paid in a brief ceremony. Friday af-
ternoon when the arena building committee
paid off Logan Contracting, contractor for
the new roof, and C.C. Parker and
Associates, architects for the project.
Halloween night was rather serene in
Goderich and Police Chief Pat King said
there were but a few mischievous incidents
to report.
Election fever may not have hit a high
pitch in the townships surrounding Goderich
but it is at least hot enough to demand voters
go to the polls November 13 and vote for at
least one representative to either county
council, township council or county board of
education.
Chess Club
Fourteen members of the chess club
played eleven games last Wednesday night.
Dennis Little and Doug Brindley each had
two wins. Club champion, John George, out-
manoeuvred Bob Dick to pick up his first
win of the season. Eric Hallam split a pair of
games as did George Barwick. Walter Gott-
schalk earned his second win of the season
in a very close game with George Barwick.
John Crawford played Mike Maurer to a
draw. Mark also had a stalemate with Mike
Cox.
Anyone m town who would like a game of
chess is welcome to come to Doug
Brindley's house on Wednesday nights
between 7:30 and 10:30 p.m.
