The Goderich Signal-Star, 1983-11-02, Page 9• Ijow to',undeistand God's Will Be Jcrne A balanced view of our faith tells Ili that submission, resignation and fatalism are not the main emphasis here. Rather we need to stress our dedication commitment to ac- tion. BY THE REVEREND JOHN D.M. WOOD VICTORIA STREET AND BENIVIILLER UNITED CHURCH MINISTER'S STUDY In the face of tragedies like the shooting down of that Korean airliher or the bomb- ings in Beirut, how do we understand the prayer, "Your Will Be Done"? Long ago, people were more ready to ac- cept events with resignation to what was perceived as God's will. Such an attitude speaks to us of folded hands, and tells us to abandon our human . efforts and wait passively for God's decisions and actions. To be resigned to God's will suggests that we accept destructive flooding instead of trying to build dams; that we accept smallpox epidemics instead of organizing mass vaccination. In one way, conditions today are the result of our confident refusal to accept what religious people of earlier generations were ready to call The Will of God. The danger is what we begin to believe that we can solve our problems without God's help. But to pray that God's Will be done involves us in asking what we can do to help His will be done. This has been trite for the pioneers who have sought that God's will be done in areas of social life where it was plainly not being done. When they sought to free the slaves, to end child labour or to fight against racism, they were trying to do the will of our heaven- ly Father. We need prayer and worship to help us centre upon God's kingdom that must come in our world, and upon His will that must be done. But true worship always brings to us a new vision of the world in its need and tragedy together with a new vision of God in His loving purpose for just such a world. Albert Schweitzer summed up God's will' in four sentences: "To know the will of God is the greatest knowledge; to accept the will of God is the greatest heroism; to do the will of God is the greatest achievement; to have the approval of God on your work is the greatest happiness." God's will be done! Ambitious renovation program planned Members of the congregation of North Street United Church will be asked to pitch in and financially assist with an amibitious renovation and construction program. While the construction program is already in progress the multi -faceted project will be phased over a two-year period. The first major building project at the church since the rear wing was opened in 1959, the new construction and fund-raising efforts will be handled by two committees with Jim Britnell heading the building committee and Stan Jones taking charge of the fund-raising committee. The congregation will have to raise $120,000 for the project which calls for the construction of a new roof over the rear portion of the church opened in 1959; the installation of an elevator to service the four levels of the church; renovations to the existing Sunday School area; the in- stallation of a fire detection system throughout the church and extensive repairs to the organ. Construction is already taking place on the site and the new elevator should be in- stalled and operational before Christmas. Members of the congregation have been supplied with pledge cards and have the opportunity to commit themselves to a donation with the luxury of phasing it over nine quarters. On Sunday, November 6, over 100 volunteers will be contacting members of the congregation. In 1982, the congregation celebrated the 150th anniversary of the building of the church. Subsequent additions were added in 1906 and 1959. On Saturday, November 5, a variety concert will be held as a kickoff event to raise interest in the fund-raising activities. Don McMillan is assembling a fine list of local talent for the variety con- cert. The congregation of North Street United Church has been asked to pitch in and raise up to $120,000 to assist with the cost of needed repairs and renovations. A new roof is already being installed over the 24 year-old rear portion of the church. The main building is 150 years old. i nhoto by Dave Svkesl Yours for 12.50 with any Estee Louder purchase.
