Smokers hi schools beware - the Huron
..,County Board of Education may be asking
youtobutt out.
Trustee Tony McQuail said he had been
contacted by a ratepayer who, because of
an allergic reaction to cigarette smoke,
had to stop volunteer work at her neigh-
bourhood school.
Mr. McQuail indicated the smoke wasn't
from the students, but from teachers and
other parent volunteers. He noted the
ratepayer, besides her own health, was
concerned about the example being set for
students.
The board's personnel and management
committees will consider the question of
smoking in schools at a joint meeting later
this month.
Trustee John Jewitt, said while cigarette
smoke doesn't bother him, any policy
established for the schools would have to
implemented system -wide. That would
include the administration building and
specifically the board room.
Currently, smoking is alloWed in the
room area and some trusteesd press
press representatives puff their, way
through the board's monthly sessions.
School
computers is
report theme
Computers aren't being forgotten in
Huron County schools. The board of educa-
tion is just taking a "responsible ap-
proach" to potential purchases.
Trustee Art Clarke, a member of the
board's ad hoc committee on computers,
told the board at its Oct. 3 meeting that the
committee will be preparing an interim
report on its activities. The report is ex-
pected to be presented at the board's
November meeting.
The trustee said the committee has
viewed a mobile computer classroom set
up by a former Huron County teacher.
Committee members are also hoping to
"get a chance to view" the computer being
touted by the provincial government.
While Huron schools will not be receiving
any of these computers on a trial basis,
Mr. Clarke said the regional ministry of
education office in London could be getting
two or three in November.
Mr. Clarke said the committee is reluc-
tant to make any proposals to purchase
classroom computers until they receive
feedback on the province's computer.
Tony McQuail, another ad hoc commit-
tee member, said there are 75 computers
already in Huron schools purchased by the
individual schools. He added that the com-
mittee has to place emphasis on having a
trained and competent staff to teach com-
puter programs to the students.
Correction
In the account of the September concert at
MacKay centre, it was reported Joan
Henwood played the flute, it should have

evening and Miss Abigail Smallwood played
the flute accompanied by Mrs. Irla Stewart.
Last week a crew doing beach renovations on St. Christopher's
Beach, saw, what they believed was a log floating in the water.
They phoned Ken Hunter and he asked Art's Landscaping to attach
chains to the log and pull it out of the water. It is believed to be part
of a very old boat. Earl Lawrence takes a closer look at the object
which still has 20 more feet under the water. ( photo by Anne
