Haley Elizabeth Lyons Hair care is topic at 4-H meet By Laurie Hayden On Wednesday, September 21, the •Port Albert Body, Builders held their third meeting at the home of Tracy and Lea Anne Liv- ingston. Charlene Henry, of Anne's Beauty Centre, was in- troduced by the leader, Don- na Hayden. She answered questions about care of the hair, covering brushing, shampooing, curling and blow drying. She also demonstrated cutting hair and French braiding. The club members really ap- preciated her visit. Marcia Soak presided for the business which included the 4-H pledge, minutes, roll call and suggestions for record books.' Members then. discussed shopping tips for consumers and participated in various activities with curling irons and blow dryers. UCW meet The regular ineeting of the Nile U.C.W. was held September 15 at 8 p.m. at the home of Mrs. Graham McNee. The president, Mrs. H. Mc'Nhinncy, opened the meeting by we'coin ing everyone and thanking Mrs. McNee for the use of her home. The minutes of two previous meetings were read and approved. The treasurer's report was given by Mrs. Girven. A new stove was purchas- ed by the U.C.W. for the church kitchen with the help of the Inner Circle group. A letter of thanks was read frons Ruth and Jun Austin for school supplies that had been sent over with Mrs. Mary Bere. U.C.W. members are to quilt a quilt and have it ready to sell tickets on in the spring. It was decided to have a fowl supper Wednesday, Oc- tober 19. Mrs. McWhinney introduc- ed the guest speaker, Mrs. Mary Bere, who had been on a trip to Australia and Papua, New Guinea. She was visiting her daughter and son-in-law, Ruth and Jim Austin, who are there for two years with ('USO. Ruth is In accountant with a job as provint•ial financial advisor in the government development office of Western Highlands Pro- vince. ,Jim teaches carpen- try, English and physical education. Mary was dressed in the national costume, Mud) was very colourful and showed pictures of the native people. They are called nationals. The pictures were also very colourful as the people are fond of bright colours. Mary also had a display of articles she had brought back, including an axe. The blade appeared to be made out of slate. She told members about some of the customs such as, when in mourning, wearing many many strings of beads, tak- ing one string off each day. Mary's presentation was thoroughly enjoyed by the members.
