The electric, light plant alterations are, to commence at midnight on Sunday and the town will be in darkness for a week or so. The Star has been informed that temporary arrangements might be made with, the Western Canada Flour Mills whereby the electric service could be continued during the time of alteration. Mrs. Beck, the well-known proprietress of the St. Lawrence, has moved into the house again and con- templates re -opening it for winter boarders. Mr. W.J. Thompson, manager of the Victoria Opera House, is meeting with deserved success. The views during the past week have been exceptionally good. The Electric Road is now assuming form round Port Albert and north and south of that village. Some 30 teams are at work grading the track. 50 YEARS AGO Thomas Legg, a former Goderich butcher who has been with the Whyte Packing Company in Stratford for the past 11 years, has returned here to conduct a butcher shop on Hamilton Street. This shop Was formerly occupied by Messrs. Allison and Kibler. Milton Kilpatrick's large barn on concession 9 of Ash- field Township has been destroyed by fire. The blaze started when a lantern was upset as sheaves of oats were being put down from the mow for feeding. When young Billy Wood's pet monkey got away this week, there was an exciting chase down South Street and three neighbouring alleys and backyards before it was caught. 25 YEARS AGO A new era in heating in Goderich will be ushered in at 12:30 noon next Tuesday when the official turn -on of natural gas will be staged by the Union Gas Company Ltd. When the valve is turned at the Town Gate Station, natural gas will start flowing from the $2,500,00 Stratford- Goderich line into the 30 miles of pipes that have been laid in Goderich. Many students par- ticipated and the standards set were high when the annual track and field meet at Goderich District Collegiate was held at Agricultural Park on Friday afternoon. Clare Harman was the senior boys' champion; Barbara Durnin was the senior girls' champion; Jerry Linfield was the intermediate boys' champion; Connie MacDonald was the in- termediate girls' champion; Bud Robinson was the junior boys' champion; and June Slater was the junior girls° champion. Unseasonably cool weather accompanied by wind -tossed waves, put a temporary stop to dredging activities at the harbor on Wednesday. But the lull in activities on the water were more than made up over on the salt plant site as work was rushed on the walls of the new building being erected. 5 YEARS AGO At least three county councillors will be seeking the post of Warden for Huron County in 1979 provided voters in their own municipalities 'see fit to return them to county council chambers in November. They are John Tinney, Reeve of Hay Township; Harold Robinson, Reeve of Howick Township; and Ervin Sillery, Reeve of Tuckersmith Township. A record crowd of over 30,000 turned out Tuesday at the Wingham site of the International Plowing Match to v,itness the official opening of the five day competition being hosted by Huron County. Construction of the senior citizens complex in Goderich may be delayed as the possibility of an Ontario Municipal Board hearing looms large.
