Senior Vikings open with shutout Squash Club debates rate John McGraw scores three touchdowns BY TD The GDCI senior Vikings opened their 1983 Huron -Perth Conference football schedule with a resounding 32-0 shutout victory over the Listowel Lords here Thursday. Viking running back,John McGraw led the Viking offence, scoring three touch- downs. McGraw finsihed off a Viking drive in the second quarter going over from the two -yard line and then scored two more majors in the fourth quarter on runs of four and nine yards. Jeff Feagan got the other Viking touchdown on a three yard dive through the line in the opening quarter. Joe Melady kicked three converts and a single point and Lee Frisby carried the ball over for a two point convert of the Vikings' final touchdown. Viking coaches Ray Donnelly and Chris Connor felt their team's offence moved the ball fairly well but said some im- provement in timing, both on passing and running plays, would help turn short gains into long ones. The Viking defence held the Lords in check and the Listowel team was unable to move the ball with any consistency. Linebacker Dave Weaver had an out- standing game and was selected as the defensive player of the game. Specialty player of the game was Brian Fitzsimons. The Vikings travel to Stratford tomorrow ( Thursday) to play the Stratford Central Rams who lost their opening game, 11-8, to the Norwell Redmen. Stopping a Listowel player in the air are two defensive Vikings as they weathered the rain and hail on Thursday to defeat their opponents 32-0 it Junior Vikings crush Listowel with 68-0 resounding shutout BY TD The Listowel Lords won the Huron -Perth Conference junior football championship last year but don't bet the family fortune on a repeat performance this season. The Lords were crushed 68-0 by the GDCT Vikings in the opening game of the schedule here Thursday. Ten touchdowns by seven different players buried the Lords, giving the Vikings a measure of revenge for their only loss last season which came in the championship final between the two teams. The Vikings piled up 565 yards in total offence while defensively stifling the I.istowel attack. Kevin Talbot, Mark Burbine and Todd Jeffrey scored two touchdowns each in the Viking romp. Hob Gibbons, Dave Almasi, Baird Robinson and John Empson scored the other Viking majors. Steve Bugler was good on six of ten convert attempts. The Vikings got two more points on a fourth quarter safety touch. Rob Gibbons was the rushing leader for the Vikings with 117 yards. Kevin Talbot ran for 103, Mark Burbine 78 yards and Baird Robinson 63. The Vikings passed for another 103 yards, 97 of them to receiver Todd Jeffrey. Coaches Bruce Baker and Bill Garrow were naturally pleased with the strong performances by the Vikings whose next game will be Thursday in Stratford against the Central Rams. The Rams defeated Norwell 8-0 in their opening game. the first game of the regular season. (photo by Anne Narejko) BY ANNE NAREJKO The Goaekt'ch Squash Club left the Recreation . Board meeting on Monday unsatisfied with the motion that the Board passed in regards to' the amount of money they should pay for use of the Mini Com- munity Centre on Cambridge Street. According to Chairman Jim McDade, the policy for the Centre is to charge a perferred rate of $6 an hour to users, under the same classification as the Squash Club, for -use of the facility. For the Squash Club, this would work out to approximately $12,000 per year, based on the estimated 50 hours of use per week for 40 weeks a year. Representatives of the Executive of the Club stated that if they were charged the perferred rate, there would be no way they could possibly pay that amount. The Clubs statement of income and expense shows their net operating income to be $378.78 for theyear ended August 31, 1983 and that was with paying no rent for the facility as the Board let them use it free of charge for one year so they could get the club started. After much debatg, Ron Klages made the motion that the Squash Club pay $2,000 for use of the Mini Community Centre, with recreation programs having priority to the facility. When the $2,000 was broken down, ( based on the 50 hours per week, 40 weeks) the rate that the club would be paying was $1 an hod?, but the Executive of the Club claimed that they do not use the facility for that much time. The Squash Club had a figure of ap- proximately $500 in mind, so they were not prepared to say whether or not they were for the motion. The Squash Club will discuss the rate at their annual meeting in October, and are to get back to the Recreation Board before the Board's next meeting. Cedar LQdge and. Meneset win their division titles .BY BRUCE BAKER The 1983 Goderich Men's Slowpitch season came to a close on Sunday as Cedar Lodge edged the Renegades 6-5 to win the "B" title and Meneset defeated Carlow 4-2 in a sudden death tie breaker to win the "C" championship. Members of the champion Cedar Lodge team are Pete Cameron, Bob McBride, Bill Hutchins, Mike Bond, Tom Costello, Harry Clarence, John and Rick Duckwor- th, Tim Frawley, Rick Gautreau, Mike Hodges, Bill Hurley, Jim Kelly. Jerry Lobb, Larry McGregor, Murray Price, Ron Stewart, Ray Volland, Dave Yeoman and Bill Harris. It it only fitting that presi- dent Tim Frawley, playing left field, caught the final out with two on base to preserve the Cedar Lodge victory. Rumor has it that he tracked it down over a 300 yard sprint — but then he started the rumor! Meneset Park came a long way this year and had to fight from behind the whole way. It all paid off though as they edged a very spirited and talented team from Carlow. On Meneset's roster, we find the following: Jim Habel, Gord Wray, John Orr, John Marshall, Bill Rahbek, Rob Jerry, Don Hullah, Dave Denotnme, Colin Andrews, Ray Black, Doug Wray, John Corriveau, Cecil Fields, Jeff Jenkins, Jim Shropshall, Ron Smith and Ray Hurd. Our 273 game schedule provided many anxious moments but also a lot of fun, and close to 10,000 man hours of recreation for the residents of our community. This would not have been possible without the assistance of our Recreation Department, in particular, Jane Netzke and Marilyn Aubin: - • The executive for '83 was president, Tim Frawley; past president, Dave Cloet; treasurer, Ron Stewart; social director, Ed Brunk; and umpire in chief, Gary Nicholson. See you on the diamond in 84! Goderich loses in semi-finals of Pee Wee tournament The Goderich Peewee tournament was held last Saturday with Goderich reaching the semi-finals and Goderich Township making it to the semi-finals in the con- solation round. The overall winner was Hullett Township, who defeated Goderich in the semi-finals, while Colborne Township defeated Stanley Township in the consolation final. The tournament was to be held on the two diamonds at Agricultural Park, but due to the heavy rain, the hardball diamond was in bad shape, so those games were played at, Victoria School. Goderich met Goderich Township in their first game, and came away with a 9-1 victory. Goderich runs were scored by Jay Williamson, Johnny Crawford, Jason Garett, Darren Stanbury with Bryan Bower, Jason O'Neil 'and.'Tommy Taylor scoring two runs each. ` Goderich then faced Hullett Township in the semi-finals, but lost by a 10-7 score. Reaching home plate in that game were Johnny Crawford, with two, John McDonald with two, Jay Williamson with one, Jason O'Neil with one homerun and one stolen. Goderich Township lost their semi-final to Stanley Township 21-14. :Coach Bill Crawford felt the entire team played well with pitcher Barry Diehl, and hitters Todd Nurse and Steve Feddes playing ex- ceptionally well. (photo by Anne Narejko) GDCI team over confident BY 'ID The GDCI junior Vikings girls' basketball team had a "learning ex- perience" in two exhibition games in Sarnia last Wednesday. The Vikings lost 52-23 to Sarnia Northern and 63-16 to Sarnia Collegiate. The Vikings had won their first two exhibition games against London schools and coach Lynn Meyers feels that perhaps they had themselves conviced they were of championship calibre before they had even seen a good quality team. The games in Sarnia brought them back to reality in a hurry. The Vikings com- mitted many errors against Northern and did not play well. They came back with an improved performance against Sarnia Collegeiate, the stronger of the two teams, although the Vikings were unable to mount much offence. Coach Meyers used three units of five. His starters were veterans Tarrany Gib- bons, Shelley Teal, Carol MacEwan, Sarah Alexander and Jennifer Peters. The second unit consisted of Catherine Murphy, Mary Katherine Stapleton, Donna Taylor, Jenny Allan and Lisa Kisch. The third unit was made up of a variety of first year players getting their first taste of competitive basketball. The Vikings began regular season play Monday with an away game versus Stratford Northwestern. They play at home today (Wednesday) against Norwell. Saturday the junior Vikings will be hosting a tournament to be held in the GDCI gyms. Meanwhile, the senior Vikings reached the consolation semi-finals last weekend in the Sarnia St. Patrick's "kick-off tour- nament" before losing to Tillsonburg, 42- 35. Coach Phil Bugler's girls fell behind in the first quarter but came back to outscore Tillsonburg in the last three quarters in what Buglers described as '`a fine team effort." The Hullett Township third baseman was too slow to get this Goderich base runner during the semi-final game of the PeeWee Tournament held last Saturday. ,Mulled defeated Godnieh and went on to win the championship.
